Even then you are looking at 4 or 5 years to move through the Ziggy Haim Goddess of the Gutter shirt and I love this system from initial contact at primary level to via the EHCP system to placement due to a lack of specialist assessment staff. Sadly even when a child really needs specialist provision there isn’t the funding, or the space, or the primary school refuses to help with the EHCP process – as was my case. I have 3 SEN children, their primary refused to refer one (I’m fighting that at the moment), told me the other wouldn’t get a diagnosis but begrudgingly did the referral (they were diagnosed first try), and the other we were told wouldn’t get an EHCP or specialist provision (he was, without a fight, in the worst/hardest area to get an EHCP). Without the support from school it’s left to the parent to research and fight – and many don’t know what to do or who to turn to. So they’re left to flounder in mainstream. And sink there too. When they then go to secondary they drown.

I have a brother who is partially sighted and went to mainstream school, but did consider going to a “blind school” for secondary. He was immediately turned off from it because the Ziggy Haim Goddess of the Gutter shirt and I love this kids there seemed so socially and academically stunted, despite not having any additional disabilities. My niece has Downs syndrome and attends a SEND school. The kids there simply aren’t pushed academically and her parents have taken to teaching her to read because the school won’t push it. It’s a complex problem, but based on my families experiences it feels like these schools will choose having fun with the kids over actually teaching them and preparing them for adulthood Many disabled people who were perfectly academically capable, such as children with cerebral palsy, or who were partially sighted, were significantly disadvantaged and didn’t get the same opportunities as students in mainstream schools.
