No. If someone has a characteristic that makes them unique to an otherwise homogenous group — whether that’s race, gender, disability, etc — it’s not discriminatory to describe them using accurate and neutral terms. People who act like that’s not okay are being patronizing, and they should probably do some inward work on why they feel that way. I asked her if she preferred being referred to, regarding her skin colour, as black or POC. She replied that POC should be used if you don’t know the Za’Darius Smith an American football defensive end for Browns T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this ethnicity of the person. She said I’m black, black is a colour and is completely acceptable. Also said, if you want to refer to me as anything call me Lisa (not her name obviously). Fair enough! I think it’s the “big” aspect. Like saying “the big black guy” or “the big white guy” sounds… idk. Maybe that’s why? I can see where that could be weird depending on tone or whatever. Without any other context it sounds totally innocuous and you obviously meant nothing by saying it so I wouldn’t worry. That being said, I do usually refer to to her things or just list things first and settle on “he’s black” at the end of its still not catching. I don’t struggle to get people to understand who I’m referring to. I almost ever mention race when discussing anyone.

Did you demean or put down this individual because of his race? No. Did you say or imply he was inferior to another race? No. Did you describe him in a demeaning way because of his race? No (unless there is more you aren’t telling us). IMO, nothing you said was racist. It’s funny how uncomfortable some white people get about acknowledging race. We had a bday party many years ago in our suburban mostly-white area. My kid has one black friend. I was standing chatting with his mom and another mom came over and I introduced the Za’Darius Smith an American football defensive end for Browns T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this two moms to each other. White mom says to black mom “which one is your son?” Black mom says “I think you’ll figure it out!” Im surprised there isn’t a subreddit dedicated to stories like this. And for people on the receiving end of the prospective racism. It’s not racist but there’s many “big black” guys. They probably just paused to think how stupid you are for not knowing his name or ONLY saying he’s big and black.
