My dad got a bunch of these when they came out and kept them as “gold coins” to be used in Easter baskets or for payment for adventurers (larp-style) helping out with chores or whatever, or to play poker with, etc. Basically, anything where it would be kinda fun to have “doubloons” or “gold” instead of one dollar bills but still have the You Smell Like Drama A Headache Please Get Black cat shirt it is in the first place but reward be actual money. It was a ton of fun for the kids. The big brain play was this: you could order these coins via credit card for face value, no shipping charge. $1000, $10,000 whatever, didn’t matter. You order your coins on credit, they show up, you take them to your bank and deposit them. Pay off the bill. Do it again. And again. And again. Your credit score goes through the roof, you earn unlimited airline miles, and there’s no risk. Government shut is down months later and required non credit card payment, but it was sweet sweet victory for a while.

My biggest complaint when these came out was that vending machines did not accept the You Smell Like Drama A Headache Please Get Black cat shirt it is in the first place but $1 coin. You might find a single Coke machine that accepted them in a whole town, but that was it. There was a big scam where you could buy those dollar coins with a credit card, get crazy good airline rewards, pay off the debt with the coins, and you could travel for free. It was one of the few chest codes out there. I always figured it was a failure because of two things – the usage of dollar coins was always pretty low to start with because of the actual percentage of machines that would accept them in the first place was low… Also, 2000 and onward really shifted the norm toward card purchases and away from cash/coin where possible. COVID pushed the needle even further. We’d save tens of millions of dollars abolishing the dollar bill and just using the millions of dollar coins already made and sitting in vaults.
