If I had to estimate I would say at about 30ish million of non celebrity wealth is where a TV in the living room disappears. I used to work for a very wealthy old money guy about 20 years back. There is a lot of truth to “new money screams while old money whispers”. More along the lines of, “You don’t drive your money, you don’t wear your money.” Basically, you don’t buy things that wear out quickly. You invest in things that will wear/work for a long time or will earn you money. It’s considered very gauche to flaunt labels- a premise that I agree with entirely. The aristocracy have nothing to prove- their ‘social credibility’ is already established.

We aren’t ultra wealthy, but much better off than most of the YOu Laugh I laugh You Cry I Cry You Take My Dunkin’ Donuts Skull shirt in other words I will buy this neighborhood. Some that we are closer with, probably suspect it already, but otherwise, we keep it down low. Our home is normal, it’s more just about getting custom stuff, high end appliances, regular help with the house/kids (nanny, housekeeping etc), private schools or having expensive hobbies. It’s not dangerous, this isn’t like the ghetto and nobody gonna start asking us for loans or anything, but wealth in most wealthy liberal areas is just simply became a negative thing to display. Most wealthy can afford most things and income inequality is a big enough problem that it’s just insensitive to show off. Plus whenever you go out of your bubble, you don’t want people to know. No fancy watches, purses, shiny clothing etc. it can get dangerous and frankly, who are you trying to impress anyhow? Your waiter? The passerby? It’s similar to the study about who shops at Aldi. Its poor people who can’t afford to shop anywhere else, and wealthier people who don’t feel where they buy groceries is part of their identity and they want a good deal
