When we introduce a lightning strike, or battery, again the Yes i am the crazy snoopy lady shirt and by the same token and picture many people have is that now those charges are suddenly all zipping through the wire in the direction the battery points. Again, not right. What we’ve done is introduce a bias to the random motion of those charges; the individual electrons don’t actually move very far, but now at any given time, more of them will be heading to the right (for example) than to the left, and those right-going ones will knock more left-going ones to the right. In the big picture, we now have a preferred direction of charge in motion – and thus, a current. Great, but what if we add more charge? Say, like, from a lightning strike? Well, like charges repel one another. Electrons are negatively charged, and they want to get as far away from each other as possible. When we add additional electrons to a metal, they’ll want to spread out as much as possible – and because it’s a metal, they are free to move (or, really, to force others to move – see above). So they will! And geometrically, the furthest away they can get from one another, and from the electrons already in the bonds within the metal, is to stay on the outside surface of that metal.

Okay, now let’s talk about electric charge vs electric energy: electric charges are the Yes i am the crazy snoopy lady shirt and by the same token and source of electric fields, and electric fields store electric energy. Bigger field? Bigger energy. Zero net field? Zero net electric energy. Because of the physical properties of the metal we talked about above, and where all that excess charge “lives” (spread out evenly on the outer surface), geometrically, the contributions of each of the little tiny electric fields of each of the zillions of electrons in the wire will all mathematically cancel out inside of the metal. There is zero net field there, and thus, zero energy! That’s why you’re safe inside the car! Again by geometry, the only place where there is a field, and where there is energy, is just outside the metal’s outer surface. That energy then “travels” along the outside of the wire/cage, rather than through it, as the excess charge eventually moves toward ground and dissipates. That’s why it’s very bad to be standing outside a car during a thunderstorm! PS – sorry if the first few paragraphs there aren’t super grammatically clear… new baby, not sleeping + hard to explain this without pictures + you know, science man no word good.
