I took zoloft for years, and my doctor was explicit that it couldn’t be used “as needed” – that’s not how SSRIs work. They require a buildup time to reach therapeutic levels in the blood, and must be maintained to avoid withdrawal. I’m concerned that your doctor wouldn’t make this clear to you. I don’t know anything about it being safe during pregnancy, it very well might be, but whether you’re pregnant or not, it shouldn’t be used on and off, and should be tapered.

Uhhh SSRIs shouldn’t be taken as needed. You take them daily or you don’t take them. And in return I’d be mentally well enough to take care of the baby. They also informed me that Zoloft is the best SSRI for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
