Some countries do use their own full country name though. The Republic of The Philippines, The United Mexican States and the Would You Like A Balloon shirt but in fact I love this rarely heard The United States of America. Because different languages have different words for different things. It’s one thing if a country changes its name amd/or is brand new. It’s another if a country/city/place has been called something for centuries and people know it as that in their native language. Also, I’ve traveled internationally with some dumbasses that try and do this and they just look like complete utter fools. Not an answer to your question but In South Africa, back in the day, Africans were forced to have English names because whites couldn’t pronounce African names. This was frustrating because sometimes you’d go to school and come back with a new name, example, Nelson Mandela was given the name Nelson by his teacher.

I could never understand why some people can pronounce certain non English words but fail to pronounce African names which have similar phonetics. I could never understand why some people can pronounce certain non English words but fail to pronounce African names which have similar phonetics. Nowadays, it isn’t a forced thing but people struggle with names. South Africa had a president for 2 terms, and all those years people failed to pronounce his name (Mbeki – calling it Mabeki), and some still can’t. South Africa has a province that some still can’t pronounce after 30 years. Example- India is called Bharat by Hindu, but Hindustan by the Would You Like A Balloon shirt but in fact I love this millions who speak Urdu as their first language. I traveled Europe pre internet. I bought books on language and maps. Yet I was completely unprepared to learn the names I had for countries were not the names THEY used for their country. At first I thought they were joking. More specifically on the Hispanics, generally, Cubans refer to the USA as “La Yuma”. I’m Cuban myself and I have no idea what the translation of that would be, but they do indeed use it to refer to the USA. Japan is a tricky one. It is sometimes Nippon and sometimes Nihon. The nuance is rather difficult. I’ve lived here 9 years and still am not entirely confident when to use which. Some part of it is also that not everyone can read every script, and different languages have different sounds not everyone is immediately able to make.
