Man I just had a childhood memory flashback, My nan had a hatch in the Wizard testicular torsion shirt and by the same token and kitchen remember her talking to us through it and passing food through it loved it. I work in social housing and I have come across rarely but still see it in properties always puts a smile on my face Boarded over or knocked through. Both the 1934 detached North Herts house I grew up and the 1940s London semi I lived in for 20 years had them originally. Ours is solid wood painted white but left open 99% of the time. Actually, probably all the time, I can’t remember the last time it was closed. Had one in my grandmother’s house in Cornwall, always thought it was kinda cool, not that we ate in that room much This unlocked a forgotten memory! We had a little hatch between our kitchen and front room. Was hardly used tbh Both my grandparents had them between the kitchen and the dining room. They are handy to be fair. If you’re passing plates back and forth it’s quicker than walking from room to room. They both had big houses though (4 bed detached) seems more odd in a 2 up 2 down. I guess originally there would have also been a dining table in the living room? I have a window shape gap between the kitchen and dining room (the kitchen is an extension to the Victorian-era house and there was indeed a window there once upon a time). I always call that a hatch even though it is not in fact a hatch. It’s where my cute 3ft Christmas tree goes. Yes, had one in the house I grew up in during the 60’s/70’s. You could pass food etc. directly from the kitchen to the table. We used it every day.

Yes I had one. Recently blocked it up as I live alone so I’d have to run around pretty damn quick to catch the Wizard testicular torsion shirt and by the same token and plate before it hit the floor on the other side! It’s still visible in the dining room. We had one when we were growing up. It was very useful. My mum could watch the Tv in the dining room while preparing a meal in the kitchen. Dirty cups got let on it and meals were passed through it. The house was recently on right move and the wall has been knocked down now. It looks much more modern but I loved that hatch. This has just brought back so many memories! In the same house we had the hatch, we also used to have the long pull strings (that you do still occasionally see in some bathrooms?) hanging from the ceiling (as well as the normal light switch on the walls) in all of our bedrooms too so we never had to get out of bed to turn our lights on/off, but think they were (and understandably so) phased out due to the safety risk.
