Oh come on, no halfway sensible company is going to dial a random number, speak to a random person, and consider that it satisfies their need for a reference. Lol, what? That’s literally what they do when they check references. They dial the Wizard I reject your reality and substitute my own shirt but in fact I love this number you give them, ask for the name you give them, then generally just confirm that you worked for that company. They legally (at least in the US) can’t even ask a ton of super specific questions. I’m curious what other experiences you have had that say this isn’t true? I own my own company. I’ll be a reference and say whatever you want, we use freelancers all the time. The hell with this bullshit system. This is awesome. The only worrying side is presenting a good reference to a bad person (I very much have someone in mind). Otherwise, you’d be helping out a lot of people who would otherwise fall thru the cracks.

i enjoy lying to HR dipshits. i have been many managers/directors/supervisors/coworkers/what-have-you for many people, it’s pretty easy. For the Wizard I reject your reality and substitute my own shirt but in fact I love this vast majority of cases, coworkers (or friends roleplaying coworkers) works just fine. The people checking your references more often than not just want to know you’re a real person and not a psycho, and obviously the system is very easily gamed. If some company had absurdly hard requirements on reference sources (I ran into this maybe twice out of 20+ companies interviewing with), I would simply push back and say not possible, sorry, but here’s what I can do. Etc etc. They don’t need to know why. That worked for them in my case. And if that’s a breaking point for them, then you move onto the next opportunity. Who cares. My very first job refused to give anyone a reference, including me. I had worked there 4 years and even gave them like a three month notice. In hindsight, it was a shitshow. One of my older coworkers said our company was known locally as the “sweatshop” of white collar workers in our city (metro of 1.5 million).

1. Length is measured from the highest point on the collar down to the bottom hem. 2. Width is measured across the body of the shirt under the armpits, one way. 3. Sleeves are measured from center back to hem.
