Feels harsh, but let your 7 year old be devastated. You can give the Wine Blood Moon Hat Witch Santa Halloween Thanksgiving Christmas Happy Hallothanksmas T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this hedgehog a little funeral together and talk about how you did all you could, and he died in the nicest way. Turn it into something meaningful and real, rather than lying. Yup. At some point someone she adores is going to die. Best start having those conversations now, courtesy of Mr Hoggy (RIP). There’s a Bluey episode about this called Copycat. They find an injured budgie and try and help it but it doesn’t survive. Your 7 year old might not be into Bluey but it’s worth a look. I don’t think you should lie and hide it. You should tell them you did everything you could to help but sometimes they don’t make it. You gave it the best chance you could and I’m sure it knew you were trying to help.

Seconding this comment; Bluey helps teach kids lesson and can be a gentler way of putting it. Sometimes things happen in nature that we can’t control and although it’s sad, it’s the Wine Blood Moon Hat Witch Santa Halloween Thanksgiving Christmas Happy Hallothanksmas T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this thought that counts. That you and your little one wanted to help but unfortunately Mr Hoggy just wasn’t very well. Bring it inside, and give it a small amount of wet cat food to eat, if it’s starving it needs to be fed little and often – one big meal will kill it. If it’s alive tomorrow, check for ticks and fleas – weak hogs can become overwhelmed with ticks and fleas to the point that it kills them, so ask the wildlife rescue place what brand of treatment they use. The drop in hedgehog numbers in the last few years has been alarming, to the point they are on their way to extinction. That’s quite worrying. Given it dog food and water, but the dogs are the reason I can’t bring it inside – 2 jack Russells will have a field day with it! The rescue place said that if it’s been outside in the day then it’ll be covered with flu eggs by now and they’ll do some real damage.
