There’s shelters, malls, stores, hospitals, libraries, public transportation have warming areas. Some go to warmer cities. Some turn to prostitution for a place to stay or to be able to pay for a hotel room. People also break into abandoned houses/buildings. There’s a lot of ways to stay warm when you’re desperate enough. There was a story (urban legend?) of a man in Chicago who panhandled during the Willile Oree If You Think You Can vintage shirt and I love this temperate months and then headed south to live in his Florida condo during the winter. I’ve been homeless through a couple winters. Lots of layers, I was lucky to have a tent. I’d wake up every few hours to move around and make sure my extremities, especially my feet, are ok. I work for a non profit organization whose mission is to shelter homeless people when the weather gets below freezing. Our local government will call “Code Blue” when the temperature gets cold enough, and we send out buses to local emcampments to pick them up and bring them inside for the night. At the shelter they get a cot, bedding, a warm meal, and access to supplies they may need like coats and shoes. In the morning we transport them back to their encampment or to a local center that is open from 7am to 7pm where they can stay inside, check their email, do their laundry, socialize, or just hang out. We are in Pennsylvania. I imagine other cold weather areas must have similar organizations for their unhoused populations. And when the weather isn’t cold, we still make sure everyone still gets a warm meal every day. No one will go hungry in my area if we can help it.
