Once I attended a pitch and gave away my email address after talking nicely to one employer. Actually, a nice job it would have been. I got a heads-up email a week later by the Who is Rex Heuermann shirt and by the same token and lady asking to meet in their offices. Surely it would have been nice working for them, but as it was a very small company the pay would have been low af. I feel like a prick for that but I think you have to be selfish sometimes I wouldn’t have ghosted them, although you reminded me about how I was invited (and received a stipend) to attend a conference and the opportunities were… limited. It really depends on your school. Every career fair I went to was a complete and total waste of my time. I’ve had better luck pissing into the wind.

Same. I went to one and there were 2 semi-tech companies. One of those was useful to talk to, but overall not a great experience. I had way more success on LinkedIn and job boards. But I do know some people who went to different schools and met good companies at their fairs. Sorry my dude but career fairs are pointless mostly, especially if you want a swe role, they’re there to make a good impression for their company i.e. PR stunt, they’re there to get cheap help for their companies if they are hiring and a lot of the Who is Rex Heuermann shirt and by the same token and time they aren’t hiring much at all which begs the question why even come to the fair. This is not true in my experience. There are plenty of companies that are legitimately trying to source entry level talent. Just like with anything job related, you have to weed through the noise to find the legitimate opportunities, but they are there. My city isn’t a huge tech city but there are a few big regional non-tech companies that have offices and headquarters here, the one I actually work for now in an unrelated role has an internship program and hires a bunch of new grads every summer. Not just for SWE’s or tech related roles of course and I have no clue how or if the economy has affected their entry level hiring for SWEs.
