I was taught that in high school. It was presented as a more nuanced reading of the Whitewater River Rafting Dad shirt moreover I will buy this civil war. I also believed it well into adult life whence I first heard about the states’ various secession declarations and the confederate VP’s “great truth of racial inequality.” I was taught this in a Mississippi high school as well. Ironically, we had just learned about the fugitive slave law the week before. That was where the slave holding states forced through federal legislation that superseded free states’ policies of creating havens for escaped slaves, requiring those states to return the humans to their abusers. Education doesn’t always equal intelligence. Some people are just really good at doing what they are told to do. Having a family with many doctors in it, and meeting a lot of their peers, I’m convinced fully that’s actually MOST experts. The smartest, most well rounded people I know are rarely famous in their fields or rich, they’re just regular troubled former gifted children with a touch of adhd and too many ethics to get stupid rich.

You could frame the Whitewater River Rafting Dad shirt moreover I will buy this cause (or at least one of them) as a states right not to have southern slave catchers operating with impunity in their territory though. It’s sorta the same bullshit that’s playing out right now with abortion rights. The states where republicans hold majorities are outlawing it completely with some trying to punish even those that leave the state to get one, even going further and trying to punish providers in states outside their jurisdiction. States with dem majorities are keeping the practice legal with some like Michigan making the right part of the state constitution. These assholes will always say one thing and do another as they get closer to their goal. Isn’t that part of the daughter’s of the confederacy agenda to purposefully spread misinformation of about the war? I learned that it was all about states rights in the south at a private Christian middle school. The only black student in my class left the school after that. People that teach this shit should be ashamed of themselves, if only they were capable of it.
