Pleasure is pleasure. Berlant: Pleasure is pleasure! We live in an anti-pleasure world. Novak: That’s why there’s a part of Poog that feels dirty. No one wants to identify as a sucker for a variety of things. But because I feel some shame [for participating in wellness culture] or it feels dirty or it’s going to make people think I’m not smart, because I have that fear or anxiety, I’m also like, no, no, no, there must be something to it. Beauty and wellness; that’s the room we’re in, that’s the mall that Berlant and I are walking through. Not just a mall; a bookstore too. Wellness being almost the room we’re in and the conversations it stimulates, and it’s also our scary willingness to be on display, clearly enchanted and participating in that commerce. The fact that there’s the embarrassing piece, and the: Oh, God, what is this revealing about me? But also the: No, I’m a person. Poog is not a thesis.
