I tried Alphonso once every year for many years from many different vendors and never liked it. Thanks! 🙂 I’ve tasted some of the best variety of Alphonso which has been given as a fancy gift. Learnt pretty quickly it was not to my taste. And in a country where your spoilt for choice with mangoes and mango season has smaller seasons to enjoy varieties there isn’t a point in spending high premium on a rather regular nice mango. (1) Alphonso isn’t as high yielding or regular bearing a tree as several other varieties. So if you don’t like the flavour profile, you are paying for it anyway. (2) Because of how commercialized the variety has become, it is comparatively part of longer supply chains. This also incentivizes traders harvesting too early and immature and ripening unnaturally. In my experience, it can be a delicious fruit, but the stars need to align.
