When the When life knocks me down Jesus picks me up shirt moreover I love this show was first announced, my phone lit up with text messages from family and close family friends asking me if I’d heard about it. Finally, a reality TV show about first-generation Indian American people and their parents had made its way onto prime-time television. The show, described as “a never-before-seen look inside the intriguing lives of seven young Indian American friends,” might as well have depicted my upbringing in Richmond: It focused on the lives of a group of Indian immigrants—known in their intimate circle as aunties and uncles—who became friends when they first moved to the United States, and their children, who basically had to become friends too, thanks to the endless weekly cultural, religious, and social gatherings.

When I watched the When life knocks me down Jesus picks me up shirt moreover I love this trailer with my mom, the similarities really hit home. In the first scene, one of the aunties is scolding her son for being on his phone. He immediately replies, “You want me to find a girlfriend so I can get married, right?” My mom pounced: “See, Puja? I am not the only crazy Indian mom out there.” Despite her good-natured needling, I knew straight away that I would be watching every week—and because I had made my way home to Virginia from New York City, my mom would be watching with me, providing blunt and hilarious commentary with each episode.
