I own this dress (pictures are from the What A Load of Rubbish T-Shirt But I will love this poshmark listing), which is black velvet, and I’m hoping it’s appropriate for an August SF wedding! Attire is formal. I’m stuck with the double whammy of not having ever been to SF (not sure of the weather) and having only been to one “formal” wedding. Please help! I don’t want to stick out but I love this dress and would love to be able to wear it. It’s a beautiful dress, but I’d usually recommend avoiding black velvet at summer/daytime weddings if you want to seem fashionable. However, if you don’t want to get another dress and as long as the invite said “formal” rather than black or white tie, then it’ll be fine and no one will mention it. Just make sure you don’t show bra straps, and wear a nice jacket or cardigan if there’s a place of worship involved. SF can be a little chilly inside the city, even in August, so a cardigan will be nice to have anyway.

Also, I would ask the What A Load of Rubbish T-Shirt But I will love this bridal party what formal means in this instance, as I have seen some dress-codes describe formal as being single colour EVENING GOWN, but where I am (UK) a formal daytime look would be quite different. Think day at the races – structured floral midi dress and hat versus opening night at the Opera – gown and gloves. What time of day is it? Velvet is very much so considered a winter fabric, but if it’s in the evening, you’d be able to get away with it. I think it’s fine — it’s not the most appropriate option, but it’s not so far off that anyone would really care. I second the suggestion of getting some kind of shoulder covering if there’s going to be a portion of the event in a house of worship. You might also find it useful to have a wrap at night because SF can get below 50F at night through most of the year.
