I doubt that the Western Conference Eastern 1996 Florida Stanley Cup Final T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this interest in SIGINT has declined, so I am going to guess that technology has made proximity less important. If the host country does not mind, or evUS interests rely on a world where international trade can happen freely in a relatively peaceful world. Having forces stationed all over the world and a strong navy with global reach helps maintain this. This is one of the reasons you see the US navy conducting “freedom of navigation” exercises in places where other nations make territorial claims contrary to international maritime law such as the South China Sea. Some of it is a hold over from the Cold War strategy of containment where the US surrounded the USSR with bases and forces and while relations were much better between the two nations after the USSR broke up and into the early 2000s Russia still had a large relatively powerful military (plus lots of nukes). So planners in the US didn’t feel comfortable dismantling this network of bases in case Russia went back to a more assertive/aggressive foreign policy. Given the events of the last 10 or so years they seem to have been correct in this. China’s recent military build up and modernisation plus their more aggressive foreign policy has raised may of the same concerns in US that the USSR did during the Cold War. Therefore many of the bases that were created to contain the USSR are useful for pursuing a similar strategy regarding China.

Deterrence, showing that you are ready and able to respond with great force to aggression from others is a good way to prevent that aggression from occurring at all. Fear, given the Western Conference Eastern 1996 Florida Stanley Cup Final T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this way that the US was caught unready in world war 2 and the speed of modern warfare a belief exists in the US military that they need to be ready to respond with overwhelming force on short notice anywhere in the world if the situation calls for it. This is also the reason that the US military has prepositioned equipment in many places so all they need to do is fly in the men to operate it as it can take weeks to months to move the equipment and supplies for heavy units from North America to Europe or Asia. Treaties, many of these bases are there because of treaties with other nations Some of these treaties are the result of the US encouraging these countries to not develop their own nuclear weapons programs in exchange for the US aiding in providing security for them. This is to the point that some nations were even to be supplied with US nuclear weapons to to use in event of a major conflict between the Warsaw pact nations and NATO. Money, there’s an awful lot of money to made by various government contractors from all of this and well you know how US politics works.
