When I was a younger man in the We Buy And Sell Junk Ain’t Nothing But a Sanford and Son Thing T-Shirt and by the same token and mid 2000’s I spent 5 weeks in Ecuador. I enjoyed all of it and then came back totally out of sorts. Big monolithic highways with new cars felt strange. Everyone coming home from work and sitting down alone to watch TV felt depressing. There was no football during lunch. People seemed so worried and stressed all the time compared to Ecuador. Over a few weeks I got back into my usual routines and it felt normal again. My point is that culture shock can be more severe coming back when you don’t expect it. Being a tourist is very different from really living somewhere… I see so many American TikToks about Amsterdam. But they have no idea how really living and working here is. Its not some Disneyland.

Yup. No surprise life is great when you’re not working and staying in hotels, seeing sights, and eating out every meal. The only place I’ve lived that was similar to traveling there was Tokyo. My apartment was tiny so I would spend all my time outside seeing new things and eating out. But the We Buy And Sell Junk Ain’t Nothing But a Sanford and Son Thing T-Shirt and by the same token and work life? Yikes. I’ve visited a lot of cities in Europe, and Amsterdam was amazing. I’ve been in the city for one week, going around one week and a half and one week again in Amsterdam. I work in social work so the vibe of Amsterdam fit well with me (open mind, freedom, straighfoward people, museums). It’s a leftist city and i’m on that side. I’ve loved lot of cities but the peace of soul I had in Amsterdam was amazing. And no, I didn’t took any drugs. What I noticed when I visited Europe is the density of the cities gives you a much stronger sense of community. It’s a good feeling. It’s much more intimate and you feel more connected to everyone and everything. There are still third places where people just hang out.
