The ODs and deaths come from sloppy mistakes. Say a dealer cuts his heroin on a dinner plate and then bags it all up. Now he goes to prepare his cocaine supply and uses the same plate. He might have just just laced all the cocaine by being sloppy and not getting a fresh plate. Or maybe he gets a call for a deal and in a rush uses an old baggie that previously contained fentanyl…

The major problem is a lack of standardization, quality control, or regulatory oversight. It’s also hard to really accurately dose substances like this using layman’s equipment: you’re often just eyeballing powders and syringes. The lack of knowledge of testing kits and the expense of regularly testing your substances prior to use is also a limiting factor for consumers to ensure their own safety independently, and it really ought not be on the consumer to verify that the product they’re consuming is what they think it is. All of these factors also cause a variety of other problems. For instance, the lack of quality control can result in harmful additives and contamination to the product. You really don’t wanna be injecting tranq with your fentanyl for example, as tranq will usually result in necrotizing of the flesh with regular use whereas fentanyl will not. Lack of sterile environments and equipment (such as clean needles) further results in the spread of infections like HIV or even just regular old sepsis due to getting some bacteria or other in an open needle wound. These problems are noticeable in many other areas of the drug market as well: most people who have done MDMA or cocaine a few times for example have probably done at least a little bit of meth without knowing it. Overall, the issues really largely just come down to a lack of oversight and regulation of a black market: sometimes suppliers are knowingly supplying contaminated product bc it’s cheaper, and they’re just trying to make a quick buck before anyone notices. Sometimes (actually more often than you’d think) they just legitimately have no way of knowing if their product is contaminated, or even if this batch just happens to be too strong. Even if the product is pure, consumers can inadvertently end up ODing due to misinformation about dosing, lack of equipment which facilitates proper dosing, or can end up very seriously harmed by even basic things like a lack of sterile equipment/environment. There is also a lack of readily available harm-reduction equipment in many places: free and readily available narcan (a substance which can reverse the process of an opiate overdose) would likely help us avoid many preventable deaths. Regulation, FDA oversight, safe-use facilities, clean needle programs, free counseling/rehabilitation programs, and other such harm reduction and legalization measures would save countless more.

Before I got clean and began treating it, I was very impulsive so I had pervasive substance abuse issues. Treatment for this and schizoeffective has fully resolved these issues for years now and I’m back in the workforce and attending college. But I had to get clean first for treatment to work and I had to want to be clean in the first place.
I have been clean for 4 years. I was not into opiates primarily I was into meth. What about countries whose men may be actively engineering the demise of our nation? You’re going to have trouble finding mushrooms laced with fentanyl, this is only a problem for certain kinds of drugs such as heroin. Not a huge problem if your goal is to buy LSD or weed or something, plus testing kits are like $15.
