I got a job offer after 4 rounds of interviews and an assignment I needed to complete, and I declined. During the Warning Basketball Mom Will Yell Loudly For A Mom T-Shirt besides I will buy this initial phase of screening I was asked what my salary requirements were, I said 70K. The role was posted as 62K-70K and I was actually making more than that already. I was told my salary requirements were fine. When I got the offer, I was offered $65K- take it or leave it. My current employer offered base+ bonus, so in reality I was making upwards of $90K if I got all the bonuses. It wasn’t worth it to me to change roles for lesser base pay, and I felt the hiring team was being a bit aggressive on their stance NOT to accommodate me even though I was told my range fit perfectly with what they thought the role was worth. During the negotiation phase, I was told there was no wiggle room to give me the full $70K even though their job listing claimed that was the top of the range. I declined after also being told there were no bonuses, the role wasn’t OTE, and I’d better hurry up and let them know if I wanted it or not. So I said no.

It made me feel like if I wanted to advance at all with this company (had I accepted the Warning Basketball Mom Will Yell Loudly For A Mom T-Shirt besides I will buy this offer), or had a differing opinion of any kind, I’d have my back against the wall- just as they were trying to do to me in order to accept their offer. That whole “you really wowed us and we’d love for you to join our team” slowly became “we know what we discussed, but oh well”. When you don’t feel right about it- no matter the reason, go with your gut. I think you did the right thing based on your experience and not having a good feeling about the hiring manager. I had a bad feeling with the HR department during my process, but I don’t regret saying no. You shouldn’t regret it either. Saying no doesn’t mean you can’t apply later with a different team or different part of the organization if you choose to later. Maybe you dodged a bullet.
