I’ve worked 3rd (graveyard) shift since 2013. Here, we get the Wage Earners Stand Together Shirt in addition I really love this option to leave an hour “early” after working our shift duration, or we can stay the extra hour. I remember the first time I was mandated at a hospital I worked at and I experienced this for the first time, I was pissed. I was so exhausted and that extra unpaid hour killed me. You work the extra hour for no pay usually iirc but then when they go forward if you’re still employed and working that night, you get it back. Except that night you’re usually expected to get all your work done an hour faster. I worked shift work for 5 years as part of rotating teams, working 12hr shifts. Better teams, (mine own included) would arrange to split the difference. The day shift and night would both work 12.5hrs shifts.

Now, in the spring when clocks roll forward, that was different. No arrangements made, night shift cheered as 2:59am suddenly became 4:00am and we were that much closer to be done. I used to work steady overnights. We got 1 hour overtime pay when working the extra hour and still 8 hours during the 7 hour shift. When I worked in bars, we had the option to keep the bar open an extra hour and often did, so extra $$$ for everyone. For me it’s always been that we work 9 hrs from when we clock in, so sometimes that’s us clocking in at 10 and leaving at 6 and sometimes that’s leaving at 8. I could easily bring in another 20-40 that last hour, especially if other bars closed at the normal time. I worked 24 hr shifts once and my shift fell on the fall back. Yes it was a 25 hour day. No my check was not a 25 hr pay. I remember working at a casino, the manager assured us we would be paid for hours worked not clock hours…I was an hour short next paycheck :/
