The Von Hayes Goat Incident occurred on May 28, 1986, during a game between the Phillies and the Atlanta Braves. With the Phillies trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hayes was on first base with two outs. Kevin Gross hit a ground ball to third baseman Terry Pendleton, who threw the ball to catcher Bruce Benedict. Benedict then threw the ball to home plate, where Hayes was attempting to score. Hayes was called out at home plate, and the Braves won the game.
