I still remember in high school i had a foreign exchange student from China in my history class. The unit we went over Tiananmen Square was the Vintage Save The Crocodile Wildlife Animal Lover T-Shirt and I love this first time he’d ever seen the famous tank photo. He was 17. A junior in high school. He cried and we had to comfort him in the hall way. 17 years and he has never seen or heard of the whole event. It was fucking surreal. Back in my days (i am 30+), it was actually mentioned in my primary school in beijing as “six four incident” 六四事件. It was cleaned up a lot compared to historical truth but still mentioned. Fun fact: contrary to what everyone parrots on reddit, Chinese official numbers on how many people died are in line with lower end of western estimates, and CCP narrative isn’t “nothing happened”, it’s “violent protestors were put down and deserved it”. Another fun fact: whether anyone died on Tiananmen is quite unclear and controversial. CCP wants to maintain its propaganda victory and say no one died on the square. We know people did die elsewhere in Beijing and in other cities, and they don’t dispute that. But western takes on it are quite inconsistent and many of the pictures supposed to prove it aren’t from the square. Real answer to the dilemma is it’s irrelevant if people died on the square itself because protests getting gunned down isn’t okay outside one square either. Goes to show how warped our narrative is too, though.

Redditors support rioters from 33 years ago in a country they know nothing about, but think Jan 6ers should’ve been shot. If BLM, ANTIFA, Proud Boys, whatever conducted themselves like the Vintage Save The Crocodile Wildlife Animal Lover T-Shirt and I love this rioters in Beijing did, Redditors would want the tank to run that guy over. I was born in 1987. This is one of the easiest memories I remember seeing. I didn’t know what or where China was but I remember this being a critical moment for the world to see how China treated its citizens. it’s no wonder CCP doesn’t want their people to see this…. the power one individual can have is terrifying to them. The photographers of the photo literally had to smuggle it out. Authorities were seizing it. And the government cut the satellite feed. The footage did have to be snuck out to free Hong Kong before it could be seen. Pretty cool story: Five photographers took photos that day – the last not being released until 2009 showing a really different angle of events. One guy hid his roll of film in a toilet because he knew the police were coming and would search his place. He was able to retrieve it and have it developed and send out from the AP office: Another photographer’s photos were hidden in their underwear and carried out to a CNN office to be transmitted back to HQ for publication:
