I feel like we are starting to live in a dystopian society that reflects a sci-fi movie made in the Vintage Roast Beef Rock-afire Explosion Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this 1990s…Strange days. Facial recognition seems great on paper. You could catch wanted murderers, rapists, terrorists, etc. You could make sure that pedophiles are not near schools, playgrounds, etc. But it all comes down to how much you trust your government use it correctly. And that’s where I have a problem. Almost everything the government controls…sucks. The last thing I want to do is give them even more control over the people that are supposed to be controlling them. Facial recognition gets it wrong a lot of times. Especially when… sadly… you’re not white. This can lead to the wrong information showing up about a criminal who “looks similar” to the computer, but when inspected by a human is obviously not the same. As we all know, many many police have arrested people who “fit the description,” and then the description is not even close to the person they arrested, and often beat.

I’ll use Colorado, reform bill states that even for simple stops like “hey turn your head lights on” officers have to get your demographics, so many departments just issue warnings now where it used to be a business card and have a nice day. Also you’re on camera with the bwc anyways so your face is associated with the incident you were contacted for. It’s not a straight up scan of your face but isn’t far off. Nowadays people’s only hope to catch crooks with badges is to turn on their phone and hit record. If they want to scan faces, their faces can say hi to social media. Semi-serious question: Could you just make ugly faces at the camera? Would sufficiently distorting your face prevent facial recognition? I’ve got kids, and can make some pretty weird faces…
