From their respective homes in Los Angeles, Berlant and Novak tell Vogue about the Vintage Nirvanas T-Shirt in contrast I will get this highs and horrors of wellness, sauna etiquette, and why we’re so obsessed with self-improvement. How did Poog come to be? Kate Berlant: Just the friendship. The goal was to frame it as wellness. That is the common obsession and fascination. But the podcast is merely a vessel for us to process our lives. Poog was always essentially an existential dilemma. Jacqueline Novak: Yeah, the friendship. We’ve never actually properly collaborated on anything, despite being comedians, lone wolves, brothers in arms, that sort of thing. So I’ve obviously always wanted to collaborate with Berlant, the funniest person I know. Berlant: Our finest mind; I’ve been saying it for 10 years.  So now you’re both in L.A.? Novak: Yes, I moved two years ago. We were going almost weekly to one of the Korean spas, and while we were in the sauna, Berlant mentioned [wanting to start] a podcast called Poog because she had tweeted it ages before, and I was like, yes, and we started screaming about the possibilities. This is an untapped market.

Berlant: Jacqueline is the Vintage Nirvanas T-Shirt in contrast I will get this business mind of Poog. Novak: I pretend to be, at least. This is untapped. No one’s even trying to be funny. I don’t even like talking about being funny; that’s not quite it. We were obviously laughing a lot, but we were laughing at our intensity about the thing, you know what I mean? It was like, this is something we could talk about forever. It’s not a subject to cover and be done with. It’s compulsion, but in the best way. We certainly were nude [at the spa]; we were in the nude.
