COVID created a situation where white people finally started to understand the Viking Irish Skull Patricks Day Shirt and by the same token and issues that Black people have dealt with for centuries. The government wasn’t helping them. And that was especially true for sex workers who, as a class, were excluded from CARES Act aid. When George Floyd was murdered, people were finally ready to listen. It opened up a conversation in the Portland dance community about racism in the clubs. People were finally ready to do something about it. So we hosted our first action and named it Stripper Strike.

The dance community can be really divisive, because you’re competing against other dancers every night. The Stripper Strike actions allowed us to see one another in a new light and build a community where marginalized voices were heard. They continued to open up the Viking Irish Skull Patricks Day Shirt and by the same token and conversation about sex work in Portland and across the country. We are in talks with dancers in 21 states, and we have chapters in four. Just because sex work touches a morally gray area does not mean that sex workers do not have the same rights as everyone else.
