Though I still vividly remember my first real trip, also to Hawaii, where we were running late to the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this airport. The security line was crazy long and we had like 10 minutes before our flight started boarding. My then GF was biting my head off because even though she was the one driving and insisted on spending an extra hour cleaning out the rental car before dropoff it was somehow my fault we were late. Just a nightmare of a trip end really, but there’s nothing I can do about it so I settle in and hope. This lady behind us has like 4 kids in tow and a giant cart full of luggage, hits a bump with the cart, and they scatter everywhere. No one needs to be having as shitty a day as I am so I go help her collect and restack her luggage. She’s very clearly appreciative and leaves me with a “bless you son” sort of thing. Not a minute later there’s an announcement over the PA for passengers of flight (whatever our flight number was) to come to the front of the line. There were probably 30 of us. The security guy that they sent out to talk to us said that the call was a mistake and to head back to the line. So, nothing to lose, I just ask him if there’s anything to do since our flight is literally boarding in minutes, and he’s like “Oh yeah, no problem” and escorts us to the front of the line. We make the flight with almost no time to spare. To this day my exes mom swears it was me helping with that lady’s luggage that got us back home that day.

There is a local dance group that my aunt is part of. The group was going to perform in Italy and there were lots of space for non-group members. So I and my cousin decided to go with them to Italy and visit some cities while they were performing. We visited Verona, Venezia and Milano. It was the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this definition of a touristic visit. Then one night when we couldn’t find something to do we decided to join the group. They were performing at a village that was not a tourist destination. We arrived there and sat in a restaurant with the best sunset view I have ever seen. I asked the waiter why there were no tourists in such a beautiful place and he told me that the village is known mostly from the locals. If we didn’t join aunt’s dance group there was no chance I could see such place. I felt quite lucky that day.
I went to Yellowstone and saw a grizzly within the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this first hour. Some people aren’t lucky enough to see any. I got lucky. Last summer I spent a week travelling around the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, the whole trip I had my eyes peeled for wildlife but we only saw a couple regular deer and some wild horses for the first 5 days. Our last 2 days were spent driving the Icefields Parkway to Jasper, and the first evening we had there we went on a horseback trail ride which was fantastic, but saw no wildlife. As we drove away literally 30 seconds down the driveway we encountered a female Grizzly with 2 young cubs, walking right along the side of the road! We were able to pull over and she walked right past our car with her babies. I felt so incredibly lucky in that moment and it was more amazing than I had even hoped for. The high I felt after that encounter was one of the best feelings I have ever felt! Even better, over the next 24 hours in Jasper we saw 6 more bears! Total 6 grizzlies and 3 black bears. Absolutely made the entire trip for me as a wildlife artist with a lifelong love/obsession with animals.

Not what you’re thinking (whales off Aus, looking down on snow capped peaks in the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this Himalayas while dancing with monkeys for the record) but getting stoned and leaving my phone on a wall in a busy market in India, realising a full 20 minutes later, running round like a headless chicken in every place I’d been before returning to the market and seeing it still sitting exactly where I left it. I was in San Gemini, Italy in 2012 for a solo vacation while in college. It’s kind of a sleepy town without a lot of tourists in March. I wandered into a pub during a slow weeknight looking for a pint and a meal. I was the only person in there besides the owner and a regular local. A quick meal alone while they socialized turned into being invited to pull up a chair and staying a while. I was studying Italian, so I had a chance to practice which added to the good time. In Chiang Mai for Loy Krathong, lots of people visiting the major temples and wandering around the city. While I was walking around, I stumbled across a small temple tucked down a little alleyway. There was nobody else around, apart from a monk and the resident cat. It was so wonderful to enjoy this little peaceful area in the middle of the city.
First visit to Paris. It was the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this first night of the trip with my wife and the last night that my business partner/mentor and his wife were going to be there. They invited us to dinner, and just said to meet at the base of the Eiffel Tower; they took us to dinner at the Jules Verne restaurant on the second level and paid the bill; we would not have been able to afford otherwise. After, we went to a piano bar filled with prostitutes (didn’t stay long!), gay techno bar (on accident, but still fun), and then a cigar/jazz place where we stayed until 3am (Mojito Havana by Arc de Triomphe). Zero chance you could plan a night like that; just had to roll with it and enjoy the experience. Unforgettable and a great lesson for me for how to travel with an open mind. (didn’t hurt that our wealthy benefactors picked up most of the checks!)
Asking my girlfriend to marry me at the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this Palenque ruins, Mexico, and wandering around after, enjoying eachother and that beautiful place. Magical afternoon. nye in cartagena me and my friends are a little out of it, in a little shop buying some beer before going to a fancy party all dressed up in a good mood and buzzed, my wife a colombian was on her toes though she started noticing people looking at us and our jewelry phones etc and was just like we gotta go lets get out of here I had booked a 24h-lay over in Abu Dhabi coming back from Beijing back in 2012/2013. I arrived in Abu Dhabi at about 5am after a long flight and was tired and very hungry. After immigration I met some wonderful girls at the taxi stand also waiting for a drive. They didn’t have a clue where to go and since I was on my own, we decided to go to the mosque together. After arriving at about 6am at the mosque, it was clearly closed but the taxi driver had already left. We were just standing around discussing what to do when a guy came up to us, asking what we were doing. Turns out he was the architect/supervisor of the renovations that were currently done at the mosque, so he invited us into his office to have some breakfast. Since he already arrived at his workplace and didn’t have any appointments that day, he offered us his chauffeur for the day, which took us to all relevant sites in Abu Dhabi and made our day very special.
Travelled to Seattle for 2-3 days couple of times and it didn’t rain the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this entire time we were there. Same with London, the weather was nice every time we have been there. Visited Machu Picchu with a college group back in the day. the actual lucky part was that I was the very last name on the list to make the cut to climb up to Huayna Picchu (the tall peak in the background of photos), where at the time they only let a certain amount up that day. the climb was brutal with the altitude and how steep it was but the views and ruins up there were staggering. one of my favorite travel moments. Hitchhiked in a town called Douz in Tunisia and found a friendly person who invited me drinking their homemade traditional alcohol in the Sahara desert with their friend, while we were mostly successful in communicating with my very broken Arabic I was drugged in Thailand, and I was lucky enough to get away. Probably without losing an organ or getting killed or something.
Took a trip to Rome in 2019. Had to split Vatican into two days, one for the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this museum the other for Saint Peter’s. The museum tour was a gift and was one of those early admissions tickets where we got in well before general admissions. Highly recommended this cause seeing everything without being pushed by crowds made waking up early worth it. I got stuck in a storm in Germany during a layover from Italy to USA. The airport was littered with travelers sleeping on the ground, every line to talk to a rep looked like Disneyland. I walked around for at least an hour before I sucked it up and got in line. The line was on the other side of a rope so I asked the worker if I could move the rope, he said why not try that service counter over there with no one in line. I went, got a voucher for a night at the Hilton, rebooked my flight for the next morning, turned around and the line turned to Disneyland. My husband and I traveled to Rome right as the Covid restricttions were easing up. It was amazing, the Vatican was empty, we had rooms to ourselves the whole time. Same trip, Italy’s men’s soccer team was in the Euro finals against England, there were watching parties at every plaza. We got to see Italy win in penalties and the crowd go crazy and party all night! It was the best trip ever and I honestly dont know how anything can top that.
Last year Tenerife, i felt quite fortunated by the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this whole experience. First time renting something on my own and im only there alone. I loved it so much that i prefer to travel alone now. Though there have been scary situations withe the wildfires last year. On my last day a helicopter trying to extinguish the fire woke me up and i was just driving away while the people got evacuated there I got my first random chance to sit in First Class upgrade for free (short flight, 2.5 hours). They paged me overhead and my partner and I walked up. The attendant explained they have one upgrade available if we’d like it. My partner immediately said I should take it, they fly for work occasionally and have had the opportunity before. I politely thanked them and said no. I’d rather sit with my partner and I honestly think I’m pretty lucky to just be married to them.
My father and I were flying together but on separate reservations. He was paged in the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this lounge for upgrade because he was top tier on that airline, he rejected the upgrade mentioning he wasn’t alone and he wanted to sit with me. Only a short flight so not much to miss, and at that time he was flying 300x a year…The agent saw I had top tier on a partner airline so just upgraded me too…nice bonus… I happened to be in DC on one of the two weekends/year when they open the south lawn to visitors. There wasn’t even a crowd or a line at security, we just walked up and were ushered through the metal detectors. I see now that there are guided tours those weekends… but I don’t remember guides (just guards), and everyone just took pictures in front of the entrance.
I was on the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this last gondola ride at a beach right as they started a fireworks show on the same beach (it seems either the gondola closed late or the show started early). That was definitely wildly unsafe, since they were popping like 10 meters from us. Really cool experience. Was having lunch in the central square in Bolzano and got hit by a wild hailstorm, the cover almost collapsing on us. The next restaurant over, the cover did collapse (everyone seemed to get out from under it safely, but still). Not sure I’d want to repeat that one, but it’s still a cherished memory (+ video I’ll be showing my grandkids!) Seeing the Great Wall with absolutely no other tourists around for miles. It was a cold morning but still gave no clue how I had the entire thing to myself. Witnessed a Livonian funeral procession in the main part of Riga. Was only there for 2 nights and was completely unplanned
My fannypack, with me and my friends cash and passports, fell out of my bag while riding a motorcycle in Southeast Asia. The vibration/wind opened a zipper. My friend was 10 minutes behind me. He picked it up. If he didn’t, that trip would’ve been so ass. We would’ve lost like 5-8k cash and our passports. When I visited Notre Dame, we had to wait outside along the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this side of the cathedral because that was the line to wait to get to the top. It started to rain so the water was dumping all over the side of the cathedral and onto us, but it was cool because the water flows out of the gargoyles mouths. I’m sure it happens occasionally but I didn’t even know that was the purpose of the gargoyles. I bet very few know it. It was also pretty because it was sunny while it was running.
Also another Paris one except I was UNLUCKY and MISSED it, but to promote the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this French Open tennis tournament, they had people zip lining from the Eiffel Tower down to the ground. They were closed up shop just as we arrived. Who in this world can say they ziplined from the Eiffel Tower?! Not me, sadly. My sister worked for Delta and before my wife and I went on our honeymoon she said she’d try to get us an upgrade. When we got to the airport in Detroit for our flight to Amsterdam we mentioned it to the gate agent, not really expecting much. She said she didn’t know anything about it, but she told us to hold on. A few minutes later she came back and said she talked to the lead flight attendant and they arranged something for us. We were moved up to first class.
I was by myself on a train in Morocco traveling from one city to another and I just felt overwhelming gratitude for the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this experience I was having and started tearing up because of how privileged I was to be able to do that. It wasn’t even anything special about the train, it was just the fact that I was doing this thing that was hard and cool and exciting all at the same time. A ~spiritual~ moment if you will that has stuck with me to this day. BUT if you wanna hear about a magical moment (maybe more of what you are asking about)… I was in Istanbul and I saw a group of dolphins swimming in the strait and it was so unexpected and so cool. Visited the tomb of Suleiman in Istanbul on a bitterly cold day in 1986 with my girlfriend. An elderly man was doing some kind of prayer and would turn to whisper to us in Turkish, and would kiss our eyelids, between reciting his prayers. It seemed like a Sufi type experience. I went to Athens during covid and the acropolis was empty. I was able to buy my tickets without queueing and we were maybe 30 inside the gates. All my pics are without people in them.
It was right in the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this heart of the pandemic when national parks started opening for the first time. Except I didn’t really know that some parks were planning on opening again anytime soon. We were cooped up in the house for months and I had never been to Yosemite before, despite it being within a days drive away. I casually check the website to see what the opening status was and it turns out they had literally just just spinned up their new reservation system for the park that same day. I was able to get tickets in the heart of the summer of 2020 on an ideal long weekend date. The next day, the entirety of the year was already booked up. We went, it was glorious. No crowds anywhere. The falls were still pretty good. Perfect weather. Spent a solid 4 nights camping in and around and got to experience the park with population numbers that probably haven’t been that low since the 70s. Some of the more out of the way trails like cathedral lakes were totally without people except for a couple of through hikers we ran into.
We went back a year later with some family that were in town, and while it still wasn’t total chaos as they had the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this reservation system going still, it was a lot busier. Now that entry restrictions are even more relaxed I feel like the only way I could comfortably experience it again is if I went during the off season. I’m pretty sure there will never be a moment again in the future where anyone could experience the park without crowds in the middle of peak visitor season. I walked into a bathroom as I was arriving at the airport in Las Vegas and found an envelope with about $2000 in it. No identification. Just cash. My friends and I argued about what to do with it(turn it in, or keep it?). What would you do in this “lucky” moment? I was in Tanzania and had just arrived on Zanzibar and got sick. I suspect it was food poisoning. I had been so excited to explore Stone Town and go on spice tours, but I spent two days throwing up in my small hotel room. On the third day, with no particular plan in place and nothing booked, but feeling a little better, I took all my stuff and got on a shared truck heading to Jambiyana, a beach area on the other side of the island.
By some wonderful stroke of fortune, among the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this other passengers (and chickens, and babies), was a group of Kiwi trainee doctors who’d been working in the country. They took me under their wing, gave me a room in the amazing beach front villa they had rented, and treated me until I was 100% better. I will never forget that kindness. I ended up having a wonderful time on Zanzibar and even got to stay in the villa on my own for a night after the group departed. We went on a privately guided birding tour to NE Argentina in late 2022. The trip included 2 days at Iguazu Falls NP. It turns out that the guide who set up our trip was personal friends with the head biologist as Iguazu Falls and it also turned out that the head biologist was currently on vacation and one of the two days we were to visit the Falls was Christmas day. Unfortunately/fortunately, Iguazu closed early on Christmas Day. However … and here is where we got our lucky break … our guide got his friend the head biologist to give my husband and I a private tour of Iguazu Falls … when the park was officially closed. So, it was just the biologist, my husband and myself there for hours in the afternoon, soaking in all the beauty of the immense series of falls, the shifting rainbows in the mist, the exotic birds, the orchids, everything without a single other tourist there.
I thought that our guide frequently arranged such special outings at Iguazu, but he told us he had never done it before and we had just gotten lucky that day …. In Portugal, we booked a tour of Peneda-Gerês National Park. It was a rainy day and all the UGA We Run This State 44 42 Clean Old Fashioned Hate Georgia Tech Shirt besides I will buy this other couples cancelled out. My wife and I went as a tour of two. It was a fantastic day, despite pouring rain for most of the day. As it was just the two of us, we got to see pretty much anything we wanted. Went on several pretty soggy hikes. May or may not have crossed into France… Saw a medieval wolf trap. Ate some great food. Saw a small, local museum. Saw a ton of wonderful waterfalls. All because we didn’t mind getting wet. March 2020, flew 20h to New York city for a wedding only to have everything close due to the pandemic. I have a picture on the Brooklyn Bridge with not another soul on it. Scrambled to get on flights back early, and made friends with someone that was mildly famous from my country as we experienced a flight cancellation due to engine trouble.
