A factor for sure. But I live at a ski hill in australia, and the Typical alien disguises shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this amount of people from the North and tropics come here and have zero idea about how cold -10 is or just think they can put on a second singlet and go skiing. Some people who come here live in climates where +20 Celsius is their winter. Or they go back country skiing and hiking with no idea or respect for the environment because they have been in canada and think Australian winter is nothing. Then get caught out. Edit because I actually read the article: the majority of deaths seem actually be at home, from old women living alone. With health conditions that make them prone to hypothermia. Still, I don’t think the issue is lack of insulation. A simple space heater will keep you alive even in a poorly-insulated space. I live in the Australian alps foothills. We see snow but it doesn’t stick until you get further up the mountain. Most houses have a fire stove for heat, but when that dies down, internal house temperatures will drop at night. As most of Australia don’t require double insoulution glass, it’s expensive and often seen as overkill. My own house has “alpine glass” a slightly thicker single glass similar to commercial shops. Bushfire is the primary concern when building so building codes focus on fire protection rather than insoulution

I’m not surprised houses get pretty cold. I once spent a Winter in Mexican mountains, where the Typical alien disguises shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this climate is usually pretty warm so insulation is terrible. Fire stove was the main resource for heat (electricity gets very expensive above a certain use), and it does get pretty cold at night (it freezes). But I do think hypothermia needs more than that. There is either some dementia issue, or some very poor health when people don’t even realize they’re too cold, or are too weak to deal with it. Because especially when you’re old, you should have been through enough Winters to know how to deal with cold: clothing, hot water bottles, blankets (maybe an electric one) or even space heaters would all fend off hypothermia.
