Some also claim they don’t like to micromanage and don’t do 1 on 1s because if you need anything you can set something up with them. That could be better than the first answer, but I’ve seen many managers who operate this way and in reality end up disappearing until shit hits the fan, then they berate the team to do better because they never took the time to truly understand what the team’s been going through and to support them. A good manager should always be taking time to dedicate to you to see how you’re doing, give you the space to share what’s on your mind or vice versa, without it always being ad-hoc conversations. A good cadence would be once a week or once every 2 weeks. The follow up question tells you what’s important to them. Are they only doing project updates with their direct reports? Or do they take the time to check in on you and see how you’re doing? Listen to your concerns? Do they take the time to mentor you? Help you clear whatever obstacles are in your way so you can continue moving forward in your career?
