In the wake of the 2020 presidential election, a surge of enthusiasm has emerged among supporters of former President Donald Trump. Among these ardent admirers are individuals who have committed serious crimes, known as convicted felons. These individuals, emboldened by the prospect of Trump’s return to power, are openly declaring their intention to vote in the 2024 election. This alarming trend poses a grave threat to the integrity of our democracy and the safety of our communities.

Historically, convicted felons have been denied the right to vote as a punishment for their crimes. This disenfranchisement stems from the belief that those who violate the law should not be allowed to participate in making laws. In recent decades, however, some states have moved to restore voting rights to certain categories of felons, such as those who have served their sentences and are not currently incarcerated.

Trump has made several overtures to convicted felons, suggesting that he will be sympathetic to their plight and support restoration of voting rights. In a 2018 interview, he stated that “we have to look at” allowing convicted felons to vote. This stance has resonated with many felons, who see Trump as a potential ally in their quest to regain their voting rights.

Allowing convicted felons to vote raises serious concerns. First, it undermines the principle that those who break the law should not have a say in making laws. Second, it increases the risk of voter fraud, as convicted felons are more likely to be involved in criminal activity. Third, it sends a dangerous message to society that lawbreaking is acceptable behavior.

It is imperative that we protect the integrity of our democracy by ensuring that only eligible citizens have the right to vote. Convicted felons have forfeited their right to participate in the electoral process and should not be allowed to influence the outcome of elections. It is our duty to preserve the sanctity of our voting system and prevent the subversion of justice.
