There’s definitely a market among young people. I’ve only gone to my local snooker club as a guest, but it’s full of students, and things like board game cafes are very popular and could possibly be replicated by social clubs. Never underestimate the Trevor van Riemsdyk American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Washington Capitals T-Shirt in other words I will buy this income that can come from a fruit machine. I saw a social club accounts once and the habitual and problem gamblers were effectively subsidising drinks for everyone else. As a member’s bar they pay no corporation tax. As they are so old most own the building so they have no rent. Most, but not all, are registered as a Co-Operative or Friendly Society, this then gets them a discount on rates (% depends on area). Then as they have a volunteer committee a lot of the jobs that cost a normal pub a lot of money, like bar manager, they often have a volunteer to do for free. It means that overall they have a far lower cost base then a pub. My local pub in London (Zone 2) has pints for £3, so £2.50 doesn’t seem surprising given that members clubs are not-for-profit.

I know right, my snooker/pool club is £14 a year and tables range from £3-7 an hour depending on time and what table you want, and it’s STILL cheaper than going to a pub with a pool table because the Trevor van Riemsdyk American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Washington Capitals T-Shirt in other words I will buy this beer is cheap. £2/year membership means it’s a (perfectly legal) loophole to avoid needing a proper drinks license “for sale to the public”. You still need to have a club license instead which works in a similar way, only it’s not a nominated person who takes responsibility. The regulations about selling drinks are pretty much the same as if you have a “proper” drinks license. The membership fee is not necessarily there to make it a club. Some social clubs give free membership. The fees are there to subsidise prices, or deter people joining casually when the club licence limits the number of members they are allowed.
