My girlfriend and I just bought a 2100 Sq ft house in Sussex County last year due to being priced out of the Princeton area. (we sold our 700 Sq ft-ish condo for ~$215k) I would suggest looking North and West of Hudson County, but you will probably need to be at the NYS border or closer to us. for your situation, the words “affordable” and “gem” are almost like oil and water. in my experience living in that area, you just have to wait it out. it’s really a battle of attrition with current house owners and other home seekers. Perhaps look at the bright side of renting. Paying for home maintenance, taxes, etc. is certainly not cheap either. Lifestyle (less than fulltime work, proximity to NYC) may be more important than home ownership and the burden that may entail. when my husband and i where younger we worked and worked and worked, took call, OT, whatever we could do to save. bought our first house and i was forced to go PT for the kid that was unplanned. we NEVER and i mean NEVER ate out, bought coffee, anything, lived off pasta in the beginning, i can tell you what we would eat by the shoprite flier. 3 kids, two houses, and 25 yrs later, i finally am able to go PT and relax a little, It is a rat race to live here. I always felt that it was a fight to get ahead, but eventually you get to a point where you can relax, thats usually because you finally own your house and got the kids to adulthood where they can support themselves. I feel your pain, but there definitely is not an easy way, thats for sure. best of luck to the young people on reddit. i hope it gets better for you

And why bother with a roommate if my parents are fine with me chilling? I have always been envious of folks who get along with their folks. I think that’s beautiful. My dad is a good man but we wouldn’t do well living together. Yeah…Hudson county native here! It’s become extremely expensive esp in JC & Hobo. I’m not from Those two…but even my hometown became unaffordable. JC in every neighborhood has become expensive even Greenville You can find a pretty decent range of more affordable housing not far from train stations in Essex County. Not being scared of minorities can save you a great deal of money and commuting time.
