Rutherford is a great suggestion. It’s a best of both worlds at the Toronto Blue Jays baseball flag shirt and I love this moment but I feel like it’s a ticking time bomb until the cats out of the bag on that and it’s no longer affordable. I’ve heard similar things about Bloomfield but don’t know as much in terms of where costs have gone the last few years You might be able to find a temporary (~2 year) solution to make things more manageable but if you NEED to be near the city you’ll need to make those NYC wages to afford it (rent is only going up especially near the city) which may mean no longer freelancing, more freelance work, or a 2nd job to supplement income. It’s a compromise a lot of us had to make to be able to afford it here and an unfortunate reality that is usually outweighed by all the other perks of being in NJ.

People on reddit are assholes. I read some of your comments, for a job like yours/freelancing you need to be close to NYC. It’s just so expensive these days… I’m in a similar position. I wish you the Toronto Blue Jays baseball flag shirt and I love this best of luck. We would like to find a two bedroom (my wife needs an office) and we have been looking all over Hudson County and a bit in Essex. We can expand our search a bit, but once you leave the NYC area, anything you gain in housing savings you quickly lose in commuting costs. We are trying to keep it below $350k. Clifton might have something in your range although things are getting nuts. We bought 12 years ago at 210k for a 2bed 1 bath with a great yard and garage. A smaller house 4 houses up just sold for 389. Be careful with this one. This is “ground level” but is actually partly below grade. Unit might be updated because of water intrusion. Also, you’ll never have windows open because it’s a fishbowl.
