Extremist people have a bit of a paranoid world view, such as “if you’re not an ally you’re my enemy!” This mentality means that people extremely far right or left politically often perceive of centrists as another enemy, or someone who is defending the Toronto Blue Jays Autism Awareness Knowledge Power shirt Furthermore, I will do this enemy. There are indeed legitimate ways to critique centrism, and what people call “centrism,” but a lot of haters are pretty much ideologically convicted people with strong opinions who have decided what is right in their heads without listening to new arguments or evidence, and oppose those who challenge them with nuance. This doesn’t only affect centrists; people on the far left often vilify people who are left-wing for not being leftist enough or for disagreeing with the reasoning behind certain stances on issues, and the same goes for people on the far right.

So I would say in conclusion, it’s either a) critique from well-informed, passionate people on those who prefer ignorance or avoid confrontation even when it’s important, or b) vitriol from extremists on those who don’t share the Toronto Blue Jays Autism Awareness Knowledge Power shirt Furthermore, I will do this same mob mentality. Both are common reasons that centrists get hate on the internet and IRL. Centrists are looked down upon because they rarely take any meaningful stance on anything. They just waffle between positions while not actually standing for anything. All while pretending to be better than both sides. Aside from the whole “if side A wants to stop discrimination of group X and side B wants to exterminate then, the centrist position facilitates the murders” aspect that everyone is focussing on – there is also the little matter of American politics being on an incredibly narrow rightshifted spectrum. In essence: what Americans call a centrist in reality is a far right loon. A true centrist would be left of the democrats.
