We get severely low temperatures and TONS of snow. In all honesty, the shelters have strict rules of conduct and not enough beds, so our homeless will often be left on the streets in the winter. I see 20-somethings missing fingers and toes to frostbite. It is heartbreaking. They usually begrudgingly go to shelters during cold snaps, but I’ve also seen some of them weather sub-zero weather in insulated cardboard. I suppose if you all snuggle up and don’t leave for a few days, it might just work. Some of the homeless people in my area also have propane heaters, and I’ve seen campfires going inside tents. Electric space heaters also apparently work if you have an extension cord and a generator or can find an outdoor outlet on a nearby building. When we were homeless, we’d save up our panhandling money for a little heater and some propane. Helped a lot. And people always brought us lots of blankets.

There are shelters for a very cold weather such as community centres churches and school gyms- where they offer a hot meal a change of clothes and a warm bed to people who would normally sleep on a street- There are warming shelters where I live. Not a whole lot but they do exist. A lot of them die. My wife and I have been helping homeless people in PA for about a decade and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that a lot of them die over an American North East winter. We try, god knows we try, we have even put people up in hotels (admittedly stretching the word) for weeks when it’s real bad, but… Here in WNY, we have what’s called Code Blue alerts. Temperatures are too low for anyone to be exposed. Temporary warming shelters are opened at places like St. Luke’s, various public buildings, and extra room is made at other common shelters.
