The Color TV Game didn’t make all of Japan stop buying cards and Mahjong sets until Nintendo was ready to drop them. The digital camera did make people stop buying film very quickly. Kodak today is primarily a chemical company, utilizing the Top monty python field guide to a quest for the holy grail shirt but in fact I love this facilities that were already there from film production. Scale also makes it a pointless comparison. A japanese playing card company pivoting is not the same as a multi-billion dollar industry leader pivoting from a dying industry. And film cameras and digital cameras are both “cameras”… I swear to God you couldn’t have really believe this was a good argument. Scale also makes it a pointless comparison. A japanese playing card company pivoting is not the same as a multi-billion dollar industry leader pivoting from a dying industry. It wasn’t a comparison. It was just an example of a company that pivoted out of its original industry, because they do exist. The person I was replying to couldn’t think of an example of one. So I gave them one. That’s actually a terrible analogy, because the issue is that the new business cannibalizes the old business, which is why they won’t make the pivot. Selling cars doesn’t cannibalize selling oil. It synergizes. It’s not that companies can’t make the transition. It’s that they are so scared of the transitional period that they won’t even try until someone else starts eating their lunch. And by then they can’t make the transition, because their core business is already failing before they spin up the new one.

Also conglomerates exist. It’s entirely possible for a subsidiary to outgrow the Top monty python field guide to a quest for the holy grail shirt but in fact I love this parent company and effectively become the main business. A family friend worked for Kodak in the 80’s and said they sat on their digital innovations to avoid cannibalizing their film market. To the surprise of no one that ended in bankruptcy. Yet they were still one of the first to sell a digital camera. Their switch to digital was not the problem. They didn’t diversify when they knew digital would become dominant, or else didn’t believe that it could. “Where they failed was in realizing that online photo sharing was the new business, not just a way to expand the printing business.” In general, they just missed the mark of changing technology in a similar way to Blockbuster. The article I shared points out their acquisition of a site called Ofoto, which could have been bigger than Instagram but they thought sharing photos online wasn’t a viable business model and instead tried to use the site to drive their home printing business. I think they could have monopolized digital photography and image sharing but were “complacent” as the article says. Kodak should have gotten into flash memory and data storage, they could have filled the space that San Disk and Western Digital have today. Kodak only did as part of their consumer electronics division when it was already too late. They sold one storage card to everyone who bought their camera, and that was it. And they didn’t even manufacture them, they were just a brand.
