Cultural awareness- being aware of different cultures, languages, people, food is what makes the world interesting. Now at home I try to learn more from other cultures/cuisines In my home city, I was told a certain area was crap and believed it without ever going there. After a decade of international travel, a friend bought a house in that area. My initial reaction was “why there?” I went to visit him and his neighbourhood and I was so surprised. it was full of foreign shops, restaurants and people I had been travelling the world to see. I have the opposite. I pack relatively heavy (a half full student size backpack) for a day trip or just some hours out of the house. I’m always ready for things to change and me to be out for 30 hours or more instead of the 2 hours I intended. When I travel, I use the same backpack and just add a few extra clothes. Potentially take out any weed (legal in my country but not surrounding places) and a pocket knife (in case of airplanes) and I’m ready to go. The one normal backpack can last me a month in widely varying climates over three continents. If it can last one month, it will do for more.

I’m with you. Packing heavy has never really hurt me in any way. And I absolutely hate scrambling to buy things I already own (like jackets for various temperatures, shoes for different occasions, gym/swim/hiking clothes, etc) so I just bring it all with me lol. I wouldn’t say I am ever underprepared. I just don’t need 3 different jacket options when one will do. Or if I absolutely know I’m not working out, I’m not wasting space on sneakers for a gym I won’t go to. I tuck my keys in my pocket. And most days, I don’t need anything else with me. The thought of carrying a purse anymore stresses me out and makes my shoulder tired
