Yes. Next month will mark nine years of sobriety for yours truly and I, honestly, could not have done it without AA. I’m not religious in anyway, shape or form and religion has never been pushed on me. In the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this early days I was attending three meetings a week. Nowadays I just attend a small afternoon Thursday meeting with is mostly women (I’m male btw) and I consider it my ‘weekly rinse’. It’s important to find a meeting that suits you. Some can be large and a little overbearing, others can be small and cosy. Going through those doors and admitting my alcoholism was the most frightening and daunting experience of my life but also the best decision I ever made. I’m a recovering alcoholic (5 1/2 years) and a nurse working with people with addictions. AA isn’t the only way for everyone but is the only way for some. Try it out, you will probably find it weird and uncomfortable. That’s gotta be pretty normal when you walk into a club that has their own rules and their own way of doing things. Like the guy above I started with multiple meetings per week. I now only go when I feel I need to (but work 40hrs a week around recovery and helping others with addiction) i wish to point out that you don’t have to believe in God to make AA work for you, but you do have to be able to tolerate other people talking about God. I don’t have any experience, but just wanted to say well done for going. I reckon it takes some balls. Good luck!
This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt- About us
I left after a month when I was feeling quite proud of myself for kicking my habit by starting to work out. I shared it with one of the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this senior group members who more or less laughed at me and told me that unless i follow the steps letter for letter and submit to the fact that I am nothing but an addict I will relapse again. I’ve dealt with a lot of shit in my life, but I have never before been so offended any something someone has said to me. My experience with AA, don’t believe there is any power making me drink, couldn’t pass step 1 or 2 and repeatedly told I would fail, left and am coming up 10 years. Couldn’t stand the rejection of responsibility by attributing my own behaviour to something I fundamentally don’t believe in. Exactly. I also hated the fact that everytime you spoke you were instructed to begin with “Hi i am xx, I am an addict”. Like there were people there who had been clean for years who kept talking about themselves like that. What kind of fucking healing process compels you to keep demeaning yourself and not letting you move on with your life?
It cultivated a sick, cultish mindset and if anything seemed to encourage relapse because you just have to have “faith” I’ve been to NA meetings, which are the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this same thing. Personally, I hated them and thought they were weird and very cultish. When you arrive, people hug you even though you don’t know them, they all say weird sayings in unison, they don’t introduce you as a new person, then at the end you all have to stand in a circle and hold hands while reciting a passage, then everyone hugs you. It’s fucking weird. There isn’t a massive lean towards religion – the ‘higher power’ thing can be anything you want it to be. A friend, an object, an apple – anything you deem a higher power. I found those meetings fucking weird and never went more than twice. SMART recovery meetings are much better as it’s just people talking – no weirdness, no hugging or holding hands, and no steps to follow. You can always do meetings online – there’s loads available and you can jump right in. Saves you going in person if you think it’ll be weird. Personally, I never got on with meetings of any kind and just fixed myself, but it can be important to be around people with the same issues for support. Everyone’s different, so don’t feel bad if it doesn’t work for you. If you’re struggling and need help or guidance, drop me a message. And don’t be afraid of hitting rock bottom again, it’s part of the process. No one gets it right first time. Eventually, it’ll click. As the saying goes: ‘you get sick and tired of feeling sick and tired’.

How to buy this This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt
I found similar with the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this AA meetings. Binned it after going to a few as it was all a bit odd. Nobody at them was overtly religious and it felt like they were all tying themselves in knots with working out what the “higher power” thing can mean alternatively. If it works for them great, but not for me. TBH sitting reminding myself about the chaos of drinking weekly or multiple times during a week didn’t help my mental health generally anyway or make it any easier so I just decided to spend my time getting back into exercise and other stuff I wanted to be doing instead and so far that’s working… With hindsight I think it worked for me because it provided a kind of free group therapy with people who had similar experiences, thoughts and feelings as my own. It can depend on the meeting and the fellowship, each is very different. The vibe I guess. If you’re going to go I would suggest trying a few different ones. See if you connect with any.
The base text and some of the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this wording is a bit god-ish. But it’s also not a strict religious organisation. It’s more about connecting with something outside of yourself. It could be a tree for all anyone cares. What it did do, it’s real strength, was give me a structure and space to really work on my issues. In AA that’s the 12 Steps and in other support groups/therapy it may be something else but broadly there’s something about being methodical with the approach to combating addiction. It did help me create positive, healthy patterns and behaviours as well as giving me a space to laugh and cry about my addiction. I also loved how easy, accessible and free it is. Any time of day or night there is a meeting happening somewhere. There’s a chair and some tea and biscuits and some friendly camaraderie. When you’re trying to quit it can be so hard. Boredom is a sneaky enemy of sobriety. Or just too much time in your own head. Give it a shot, there’s no membership fees, no-one takes your name at the door and you can come and go as you please.
The other really useful thing is that it sets aside time in the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this week for dealing with the issue, it makes it more difficult to say “I don’t want to deal with it now”, at least that was my experience with ACA which follows a very similar format. They’ll be welcoming, some are a bit religious it’s not that important to others. Go to different meetings they have different vibes and different characters. Like life you won’t like everyone but they all share one aim so be mindful of that. The meetings can be quite taxing at times but they can be mad funny. Best of luck, its hack as fuck but just focus on getting through today. I think you’ll probably feel better after tonight. Just go. It will be scary to walk down there but just do it. Even if you don’t stop tonight you will meet other people with a similar story and you can see you’re not alone I have been to https://al-anon.org meetings and find it helpful. (for anyone whose life is or has been affected by someone else’s drinking)
Most 12 step programs often say ‘take what you need and leave the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this rest’. Hopefully some parts will be helpful to you Hi there. I am an alcoholic, who was desperate to stop drinking. I went to AA over 12 years ago, and have not had a drink since. I am a lapsed Catholic, who doesn’t agree with organised religion. (I also believe that your personal beliefs are just that. Personal.) they use the word “god” as a “higher power “ , which I’ve never really understood, apart from the fact that someone is looking out for you?! I think that it would be a very strange cult, that is voluntary, free, (with voluntary donations) encourages a life free from the slavery of addiction, and only makes suggestions to help you stay stopped. It also states that sobriety is a bridge to a normal life, which is why I do very few meetings. I found it to be a more spiritual guide to living, as it makes you look at yourself, and how you treat others, which is a Buddhist concept. I have never known an alcoholic who has not regretted the way that they have spoken to, or acted towards others, while in active addiction. There are people in meetings that have turned towards religion, or reconnected with their faith. Whatever works. All I can suggest is that if you wish to give it a go, please go with an open mind, take from the meeting what you need, and if someone tries to push religion down your neck, politely tell them that you have your own beliefs, and that should be respected. Meetings are like life in general, full of characters, some receiving outside help for issues that need counselling/therapy, which is actively encouraged, and you may not get on with certain individuals, but hey ho, I’ve never worked for a company where I liked everyone! The very best of luck to you.
Good luck brother, I’m not an alcoholic but I stoped drinking about a month ago for my mental health! Took me a few weeks but now I’m calmer, fitter, stronger, faster . All you can do is attend a meeting and see how you get on, if it isn’t for you there are lots of alternatives available. I used to help me quit smoking, manage my alcohol intake and lose weight/eat better. I’m sure there is one in every county so they may be worth a look. The big step is you’ve realised you have a problem and want to remedy it. As someone that has struggled with all sorts in the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this past I wish you the best of luck, just know you aren’t alone and there is always help available somewhere. I hit 2 years clean and sober on thursday. I do AA. I struggled with the god stuff and choose now to just erase it in my mind. The people are what keep me coming back. Made my best friends there 🙂
Your local authority might fund an alcohol reduction programme, where you could access free health coaching and support. My BIL has been in AA for 11 years now and he’s a sponsor. It’s not quite as religious like you’d expect in America. If you are worried about your drinking, surely it’s better to try and realise it’s not for you and find another resource, then not to try it out and find yourself having another rock bottom moment. I went to my GP and she was amazing though told I must not stop on my own as it would be too dangerous. I was referred to my local addiction team and they were ok n touch very quickly. They arranged a medically supervised detox and medication which helped a lot. I was put on camprall which removes alcohol cravings and Antabuse which prevents me drinking. I still take the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this latter now. Then lots of one to one counselling with a specialist psychologist, which was the key. Sober for over 10years, I put that down to AA. Talking to like minded individuals before and after a meeting really helps. I’m a staunch atheist these days which can make it hard to go now but I’m a big advocate for AA. You just have to realise it’s based in 1930s language and beliefs which need an update. Go along what’s the worst that can happen? If you’re at this point, as am I, then you’ve got to go. I’m not in a position to Judge who is the best at giving out advice to drunks. I got myself in a mess and stayed with a friend for a few weeks. He suggested we do a mini rehab together. He’s big into fitness and never really drank anyway. We spent our time at work all day together, got home and cooked something together and then went to the gym before watching a movie together. Some times it doesn’t have to be as extreme as you’re lead to believe you just need the right support system. Is there anyone like that you know ?
You don’t even have to stay with them like I did, just some company that isn’t centered around the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this pub and alcohol. We’re all different but because of the lessons I was taught I’m able to have a few and enjoy it. I know I was very lucky and friends like that are few and far between but it doesn’t have to be extreme like AA or Turning point. Just someone to go through the journey with you and teach you how to be normal again. Please feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk anymore. It’s a hard thing to kick and it will be something you deal with constantly. But it gets easier and more manageable when you can talk to someone who either supports you or understands the problem. A family member goes to AA. There are different meetings with different levels of religiosity. At the beginning they were going every day to different meetings in the area where they lived; now they have a few where they feel most comfortable. They are not particularly religious.
The main advantage is that you might need a group of people that used to drink to replace the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this group of people that do drink. I’m sober 17 years in AA. Got sober in London. I used to go to the big lunchtime meetings in the west end and you’d have Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, catholic, Protestant, Hindu and even Hare Krishna in the same room. Plus the majority of folk who were atheists, agnostics etc. If AA was a religious cult them folk would have been kicking lumps out of each other rather than helping one another get sober. I’m agnostic and have taken men through the steps who have been atheist, Christian, Muslim and agnostic . I don’t think anyone who is militantly atheist has anything the fear from AA, no one is going to turn them away and no one will ask you to join the moonies, Islam, Christian, Scientology etc etc. AA works for those it works for, but there are other horses in the race. SMART have a lot going for them. But just doing the one thing won’t be a magic cure; recovery is best approached holistically. Be kind to yourself, reward yourself, say, every week or month, access some talking therapy (I’d say the majority of addicts have issues it could be beneficial to address), think about volunteering your time or try something creative. Not drinking gives you a lot of time to suddenly fill up; doing positive things helps hugely. All the best, you’re doing great already. Future you will be grateful.
Dunno about God and aw the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this rest of it and this comment will be buried beneath everything else – But good luck pal. You’re a strong person for going in the first place, whatever you feel about it. Cultish mostly, avoid. Some decent people in them, but also a lot of people who seem rather bitter and devoid of love, and who have turned sobriety into a quasi-religion. They like to judge you, and preach loudly about how long they’ve been sober for, as if it were all about the number of alcoholic drinks. Look into SMART Recovery, and The Sinclair Method. There’s also Thrive Recovery on TikTok, they talk a lot of sense but they’re based in the US. I did my thesis on cults (mostly UFO/higher being ones, but still). And when I started going to AA, it completely freaked me out, because it had all the hallmarks of a cult, and people never leave. But I figured, if it’s trying to do good, then maybe I should just push past it.
I tried about 15 different AA groups across three counties, and the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this most common thing I found was that people were just using it as normal therapy. “Hi, I’m an alcoholic. I’ve been 52 years sober, and I can’t sleep because I’m worried my grandkid hates me.” Stuff like that. And at the time, I was really fucking struggling, and when I tried saying that I don’t know how to stop drinking, I need to stop drinking, I’d just get some wishy washy “take it one minute at a time” shite. There was no immediate or specific help. Also, all of those who say it isn’t religious. It is. They say you can use whatever “higher power” you want, but… there is no higher power if you’re an atheist lol. You HAVE to pick something for it to work, and it’s just exhausting.
It wasn’t helpful for me at all, and I actually found that it started setting me back on my road to recovery. That’s not to say that it won’t work for you OP, and I’d always implore you to give it a try. But what worked for me was a combination of SMART recovery (where they basically went, “look, here’s how your brain is betraying you right now. And here are some hacks to shut it up!”), Sober Faction from TST (for the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this social aspect, and the positive peer pressure to keeping me from stumbling), and joining as many hobby classes as I could physically fit into a week (to keep myself distracted). In my personal experience, AA works primarily on shame. If you relapse, you’re back to day one. And that’s not the kind of energy I needed to heal, y’know? SMART doesn’t say that – they say OK, you made a mistake, but you haven’t lost all the progress you’ve made, and you’re not starting again from scratch. But honestly, I’d say give a few meetings of AA a go. Try SMART. Read some self help books. Join a few online communities. Find whatever helps you, and stick with it. You’ve done the hardest thing by admitting you have a problem, and now you can only start going up.
my higher power is the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this universe. i don’t believe in god and was never compelled to start. you can pick whatever you feel most comfortable with – all you have to accept is that there is something greater than you at work in the world. or, as my sponsor said to me – did you make the sun rise this morning? of course not. so there’s something bigger than you. i have never been shamed in an AA meeting. there are many ways to sobriety. AA is one of them. i’m glad you found something that worked for you. I have always thought AA was a cult. Full of deluded addicts convincing themselves they don’t want to drink or use drugs. Edit: I’m being glib and your remarks about AA are definitely true. There are a lot of things that make me uneasy about it. I attend a single NA meeting a week now (18 months sober…weaning off methadone currently) but it is a small group that involves some lifelong friends (pre and post active addiction); I think the main benefit of any such group is: When you hear people talk about what their addiction did to them you can see immediately “well you should definitely stop taking drugs/drinking it’s been a disaster for you, are you mad?” It sounds silly but addiction is a disease where you learn to never think properly about it, to hide it from yourself, to equivocate and minimise it. Smart recovery does sound good too, but I always found that understanding how my brain was being hijacked by drugs did little to alleviate it.
There may be other mutual aid groups locally. AA is a specific vibe which works for some but not others. If you Google nhs support for alcohol misuse, your local service probably offers group therapy (without long waits) and will advise on local mutual aid. Yes, I went to meetings for a a few months after going sober. Religion can be a part if you want it to be but the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this rule/step is find a higher power to be accountable to, for someone that is a diety but have heard others use other things even a ash tray. At the end of the day you just have to do it, it s brilliant and supportive and really helps to make that permanent change. At the end of the day it won’t kill you to go but it could kill you not too. Ifvyou have anymore questions or need anything else feel free to message me. I am over 1000 days sober.
I was made to attend 4 times a week when I was in rehab last year. It works for some, I’ll freely admit, but personally I think you have to give yourself up to it. Despite the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this protests, you’ll be constantly told it’s not about God, and the name is used for simplicity and you’re welcome to choose one of your choosing. I had an idea to try and wrap my head around the whole thing and was outright told it was stupid and wouldn’t work. That was from the head counsellor. Very useful! You’ll find what works for you. AA wasn’t my thing. CGL do seem quite a decent group, although I’ve been let down by them recently. With that being said, my key worker is furious about how I was treated and is bang on the case. We’ll see what happens.
Never done AA but i did SMART when i quit drinking and found their online meetings amazing. I’m 1153 days sober now. I’d highly recommend them. Give different meetings a try as some are better than others (some hold hands etc others don’t). Tell people it’s your first meeting/s and they’ll say to go every day and keep going. Once you’ve found your regular meeting you’ll want to get service which could be a greeter or tidy upper etc, don’t contribute any money your first weeks, don’t be afraid to give out your number to those who want to help you; it might get a bit overwhelming with people calling you but they’re just checking up. Regarding the This girl loves her fireman and Milwaukee Brewers shirt Also,I will get this religious overtone, just try to come to terms with what the word God might mean to you- one old chap said replace the word ‘God’ with ‘Good’ if that helps.
