Source: I work for a company that handles HR for other companies, and on Friday-Saturday I worked a 26 hour day to babysit an overnight upgrade hours of meetings during the Things I Do In My Spare Time Car Guy Car Enthusiast T-Shirt But I will love this normal 9-5 work day. Two years ago they made me work a 36 hour work day due to a major system failure. During those times my only option would have been to quit. on the other hand I make much more than the minimums, and I worked Friday-Saturday from home. I learned about the exemption after mentioning that I was going to call it quits for the night after the first 16 hours (maximum allowable shift length for most people) during that 36 hour day a few years ago. All this is UK-specific btw. It has been a big reason why nurses balloted for strike action – if they downed tools on the dot, patients would die. But there isn’t the inclination nor willpower to track every time a nurse stays half an hour past their finish time because a patient went into cardiac arrest at an inconvenient time.
