I love new tech but I refuse to use self checkouts for a few reasons. I do not work for the There Is No Such Things As Too Many Books Lover T-Shirt and I love this store. I hate seeing machines taking jobs from humans. I prefer to interact with humans in my daily life. Free labor? Lmao it takes me like 3 minutes to cash out a large grocery shopping order, maybe up to 10 minutes if I gotta find bags or something, but that’s more about that specific store being shit. Packing it yourself doesn’t add much and it makes sure there aren’t any errors when you ring something up, and you can pack the bags in whatever way is optimal so your shit isn’t being squished. I can’t tell you how many high teenagers at price chopper will double scan something then quickly put it in the bottom of the bag hoping I didn’t notice it was scanned twice or hoping I didn’t notice they put my eggs on the bottom of the bag under 15-20lbs of food. Self checkouts also move insanely fast. The same people with a cart full of groceries are going through self checkouts MUCH quicker than the manned lanes.

I see videos of boomers losing their mind at the There Is No Such Things As Too Many Books Lover T-Shirt and I love this idea of having to do an ounce of “labor” by putting their groceries that they’re buying into a bag themselves. I don’t work there, why should I be required to check myself out? If you want me to perform self checkout, put a barcode scanner on the phone app and allow me to scan and walk out with my stuff. Otherwise, check me out with a clerk. Okay, so Sams Club actually has this and it’s super nice. Just scan stuff as you put it into your cart and then pay while you’re heading to the exit. They scan the receipt on your phone and you’re good. Meijer though? Even with their shitty app you STILL have to go through a physical check out and scan 10+ items. Lol like, it’s such a massive waist of time I won’t even bother to use it.
