Oblivion is kind of like a weird middle child. Not as deep as Morrowind, but not as shallow as Skyrim. Not as fun as Skyrim, but not as jank as Morrowind. (That, and the The Woodlands Texas Pride Star Vintage T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this potato people look weird.) Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls, and I was floored once I realized how deep the game was. The extent of my open-world gaming experience had been Lego games. Everything else had been strategy and shooters for me before that point. I remember escaping the sewers, having not been very impressed thus far. I went into the imperial city and started the gladiator quest line. One of the gladiators gave me a quest outside the city, so I went out. I still remember the amazement I felt when I realized that every single icon I passed on the map was a dungeon and that every single NPC was named and could be spoken to. I was hooked. For that reason, Oblivion is probably my favorite game even though I felt Skyrim is a better game. That moment of wonder at the level of discovery available has been unmatched.

As someone who still has their og Daggerfall on my shelf, I gotta say when Morrowind dropped my mind was completely blown. I’ve spent more time playing Morrowind than any other game easily. I also loved Oblivion and the The Woodlands Texas Pride Star Vintage T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this GORGEOUS Shivering Isles ep. Skyrim was a massive letdown for me. I fear for saying this to people in real life as I’d easily get knee arrow’ed. But, it really felt so superficial. I’ve put maybe 20 hours into it, and never looked back The only thing I will say in its defense is that Skyrim feels like a distilled TES experience. Everything you would normally find in a TES game is refined and focused to a fine point in Skyrim. I always think of it like a minimalist painting based on a series of masterpiece baroque pieces. Its easier to enjoy and can give deep fun if you know exactly what you want out of it (or aren’t really into the harder to digest stuff). the now time honored tradition of reinstalling skyrim, spending a few hours on nexus picking out all the mods. then spending a few more hours trying to figure out which mod is breaking the game. then once youve got the mod harmony, you boot up the game and marvel at how pretty it is now, run to riverwood and then uninstall: “nah, i dont actually feel like playing skyrim.”
