Athleta: before they were bought by Gap Brands they were outstanding. The clothes looked and felt so much better and lasted a really long time before showing signs of wear. I owned a black faux wrap dress from them that I called the The true original mickey mouse shirt What’s more,I will buy this magic dress. It was the most perfect piece of clothing, I even wore it to weddings pregnant it was so flattering and my favorite closet item. Once they were acquired, I noticed the prices went up and the quality went down. The sizing changed. I haven’t really bought anything from them in the last decade so I can’t say of has changed back. But that one really hit me in the gut. Google tells me that Gap brands acquired Athleta in 2008, which is when the quality of a lot of brands dropped. So it’s tough to say if this change was due to the acquisition or due to the changing economic forces/the economic disaster of that time period. (Possibly a mix of both.) Gap, Loft, J Crew, really most major brands all dropped in quality around that point.

For what it’s worth, I love Athleta, though I only started shopping there in 2019. I’m pretty rough on my gym clothes because I do strongman training, and my only issues have been with some inner thigh piling on the The true original mickey mouse shirt What’s more,I will buy this softer fabrics. Their return policy is still pretty legit – 60 days no question, even if used and you cut out the tag. And they’re B Corp. There has been discussion on the Athleta subreddit about the past few seasons not being up to par though, so ymmv. My Athleta leggings have held up so well (besides the fleece lined ones). Easily 8 years. And I throw them in the dryer. I find that some of the knits are trickier and prone to snagging, but hold up well otherwise. Lululemon: while stupidly expensive for the genre, I have typically found that the quality holds up well most of the time. They did used to have a more favorable “warranty” policy where they would replace items that didn’t live up to their quality standards, but that has been watered down in recent years. I think now it’s primarily up to the SA in the store if they want to accept a return or replacement on quality standards and it will have to be relatively new. That being said, they have replaced a few items for me, while Nike essentially laughed in my face for the same thing. Lululemon are one of the places I’ve shopped at almost 20 years now. But they are near the top of my list for brands that “increased price and decreased quality”. My 15 year old leggings have held up better than the 3 year old ones. It is too bad they used to be dominant voice in stylish yet functional athletic world.
