It’s also because “plastic” is not a single homogeneous thing, but a class of materials. A lot of what we use in our daily lives has multiple types of plastics involved, often bonded together in a way that makes separating them really difficult. Only a handful of specific types of plastic are realistically recyclable, and then only if they aren’t part of something with other types. It’s cheaper for wealthy countries to ship all of their single-use plastic waste to poor countries and pay them to take it, where it just piles up and pollutes their environment. It’s a lot of reasons. Also a lot of plastics, especially soft plastics can’t be easily recycled with current technologies. Very few plastics made today are of types that can be recycled. The main reason for that is that recyclable plastics are more expensive. Another problem is the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but plastics can only be recycled in specific factories, whereas most plastics are just dumped in a bin somewhere and ends up on a landfill. But because of the fromer point, that hardly matters. Most plastic that is “recycled” is just burned for energy, which, obviously, emits lots of greenhouse gasses. Recycling is the answer to many environmental problems. We can get like 99 % of the components out of old batteries, and doing so is cheaper than getting them out of the ground, so once the worlds need for batteries stops growing so fast, the need to mine for minerals to produce batteries will go down significantly, for example. Aluminium, paper and glass are also good examples. But for plastics, the solution is to find other alternatives. It’s not even like paper is expensive.
The System standard of excellence shirt, hoodie, long sleeve, v-neck tee
I’ve been seeing this BS meme for years and it pisses me off every time. Yes, what we can do as individuals won’t help nearly as much as what the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but corporations can do. That doesn’t mean we should discourage individuals from doing what we can! Yeah, this meme was obviously made by, or at least spread by some big oil company trying to make people think they have no reason to stop driving their gas guzzler. And yet I see reddit eat it up all the time. This is the first thread I’ve seen of it where people actually are critical of the post, which I love. If people eat it up every time, then it’s probably easier to assume it’s confirming their biases rather than being made or spread by oil companies. Perhaps oil companies had a hand in the original clickbait titles “100 companies responsible for 71% of emissions”, but this kind of “companies bad” meme creates and spreads itself. Hell, I even believed there was nothing I could do until I actually read the articles. To be fair meat and other animal products require a massive amount of space because they eat multiple times their calories in plant matter and produce unholy amounts of c02 and other bad gasses.
But maybe it’s a great idea to switch from a Ford F150 to something more sensible when doing a commute from NJ to downtown Manhattan, that kind of thing. We love to focus on it being a choice. You either are a poluting earth hating car driver or you walk everywhere, while there’s a middle to be found where you can still drive to work, you’re just being more sensible about it. But nah, we’ll focus on Taylor Swift and continue to roll coal because that’s what we do. Reminder that those 100 corporations are responsible for producing the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but fossil fuels that created 71% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988, according to a new report. The Carbon Majors Report (pdf) “pinpoints how a relatively small set of fossil fuel producers may hold the key to systemic change on carbon emissions,” says Pedro Faria, technical director at environmental non-profit CDP, which published the report in collaboration with the Climate Accountability Institute.

Some information about The System standard of excellence shirt
The report found that more than half of global industrial emissions since 1988 – the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but year the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was established – can be traced to just 25 corporate and state-owned entities. The scale of historical emissions associated with these fossil fuel producers is large enough to have contributed significantly to climate change, according to the report. Shutting down these businesses would cut into greenhouse gas production, it would also mean that lots of folks couldn’t afford to heat their houses. So it’s not the corporations that are producing the GHGs exactly, they produce the fossil fuels and then the people use them? we should definitely stop using fossil fuels tho and opt for cleaner energy sources like nuclear and wind/solar we should definitely stop using fossil fuels tho and opt for cleaner energy sources like nuclear and wind/solar
We’re actually producing new renewable energy more quickly than even the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but most hopeful predictions, but that’s not a story r/Facepalm/ would tell you. “Record rates of growth across Europe, the US and Brazil have put renewables on track to overtake coal as the largest source of global electricity generation by early 2025, the IEA said. By 2028, it forecasts renewable energy sources will account for more than 42% of global electricity generation.” Unfortunately for us, hope doesn’t get clicks, or engagement, or shares on social media; “Dog doesn’t bite man” doesn’t sell papers, it goes below the fold. And yet hope is what we need right now; hope alone won’t solve our problems, but hopelessness will definitely make them worse.
Unfortunately it’s really hard to do things 20 years ago, we can only do stuff now, and right now we’re building new renewable energy faster than anyone anticipated we could. Twenty years ago we thought it would take fifty years to get this far, twenty years from now we’ll be glad we kept doing the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but work. It’s probably only making progress now because millennials and the younger generations are starting to become a louder voice than boomers. Those business produce those emissions to provide the population what it consumes….. consuming less will lead to them curbing production…. This is one of my greatest pet peeves: the stat about 70% of emissions being from 100 corporations is extremely misleading to the point of absurdity. For what it’s worth, I’m an avid environmentalist in favor of corporate environmental regulations.
Look up the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but list of the 100 companies referenced. It’s all oil, gas, and coal companies. The critical part that is missed is that 71% of emissions can be TRACED BACK to these 100 companies. The companies aren’t burning these fuels, they’re selling them to you and I and the other companies that manufacture and ship the goods we consume. Without consumption, these emissions would not exist. Consumption, our individual and collective lifestyle, is indeed at the root of climate change. This isn’t to say that these companies haven’t tried to manipulate science, media, and politics in the name of maintaining the fossil fuel status que. They have and they should be held accountable. But to wipe away all traces of personal and social accountability by deferring all blame to corporations is simply passing the baton. I’ve seen many people use this statistic as an excuse for not making changes to their lives and communities and it’s extremely frustrating.
Without consumption, these emissions would not exist. Consumption, our individual and collective lifestyle, is indeed at the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but root of climate change. Without consumption we would all die. The point being we’re tied up by the system. Most of us don’t have a choice to consume those to live and for some to survive. It’s not our fault. Those that have to make the greatest effort are those in power and those corporation. Not us. Do you think people would still eat a lot of meat if it would cost you an arm because it wouldn’t be produced industrially anymore? Certainly a base level of consumption is necessary for survival. However, much of what we consume (as someone in the West) is not. I am all for systemic reforms; there is only so much a consumer can do within a flawed system. This does not negate the fact that overconsumption remains a huge issue. To use myself as an example, I got into a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle this past year. Most of what I buy is secondhand. I reuse things until they can’t be used anymore. I avoid disposable things when possible. All gifts are experience based vs material based. I don’t eat meat. I have cut my consumption in half in the past year without any real disruption to my quality of life. Certainly a base level of consumption is necessary for survival. However, much of what we consume (as someone in the West) is not.
However, this wouldn’t change the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but drastic reduction in energy used. Which is the whole point. This is one of the few cases where our consumer choices can actually make a difference. Correction Adam Johnson; those 100 corporations (that you undoubtedly hate for political reasons) just sell you 71% of what YOU buy and use. They don’t just pour greenhouse gasses out into the atmosphere because “hey, it’s sunday. Let’s do something fun”. Snappy, but corporations exist to provide goods and services to consumers. It’s in part up to the consumer to choose where or where not to spend money. I know that this statement becomes increasingly false as corporate monopolies take market share, but at least some of that 71% statistic is the consumer’s responsibility imo. There’s not enough alternative options for consumers to make a choice. Look at how many rural areas rely on Walmart or Amazon because no other business has the resources to service those areas. Expecting millions of people to all collectively make the right decision will never work. It should be the responsibilities of the leaders controlling resources to do the right thing Yeah that’s why I said my statement becomes more false with monopolies taking market share. There’s definitely a point of no return. I wonder if we’ve reached that point. I know we’re not completely to blame, but we aren’t innocent either if that has already happened.
This is such a broadly absurd statement, especially given there are LITERALLY some alternatives provided people can choose (eg. eat less meat). And just because a few (and the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but vast majority at that) don’t have all the alternatives doesn’t mean others shouldn’t bother to take action Expecting corporations to act out of non-profit motives won’t work either. Expecting government to act without the backing or will of the people won’t as well The worldwide meat industry, faced with consequent heavy financial losses, would shrink correspondingly, automatically leading to reduced energy usage needed for upkeep of livestock quotas, feed production, meat storage and the like, and also much lower direct methane generation (from livestock burps),
Industrialization is a large part of consumption in the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but meat industry and other industries as well. Another factor is transportation from non-localised goods. We’re trucking and shipping things all over the place. Which isn’t a bad thing, but a large chunk of that is completely unnecessary with proper planning. Theory is fine and dandy, how would this happen in the real world, particularly in places where there is no alternative? At best governments around the world could start propaganda campaigns, orrrrr, they could regulate industries to force them down to a reasonable size (not allowing mergers, placing limits on prices) and that infinite grown not be their goal, so why this “its on the consumers” attitude? We as “consumers” supposedly elect leaders to act in our interests, make collective decisions that we as individuals cannot coordinate enough to achieve, but those leaders act in the interest of those who are wealthy to line their own pockets or call in favours, making them create conditions that are worse for the majority. Create a fair trial where blame for climate change is assigned and you’ll find the “consumers” be unwilling participants, not blameless, but definitely not the problem
the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but left-over frustration is being projected on “a company”, on “foreigner”, on “the devil” or whatever delusion people chose to sleep at night. Adam is not wrong, but what happens is that Adam gets mad at CNN for not pointing out the corporations and feels that that is enough so he doesn’t have to change ANY habbit. Because, why bother to change if it’s others being the problem. I,m gonna put on my NIKE’s, eat a steak from the other side of the world and complain about big corpo on my smartphone. As long as i have a “company” to blame it does’nt matter what i do, i can just be their customer AND have someone to blame! I am so fucking sick of seeing that argument, it is so bloody stupid. WHY DO YOU THINK THESE COMPANIES ARE PRODUCING POLLUTION??? It’s for consumers! It’s for you! Idiots acting like people just open up big pollution factories to make pollution. Cant remember how many times I have seen people on this site use this exact argument. Ah yes, deflecting personal responsibility and everybody praising it because it allows them to do the exact same thing and just complain about big corps while doing jack shit to help. They say “what you can do”. They only forgot the most important one that is “vote for a government/president that put this subject as a priority”.
Then you get to the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but other problem: Starting a citrus farm in Minnesota in suicide. Likewise, starting a banana farm in Nevada or an apple farm in Arizona. You will lose your shirt and you will be clobbered at the markets. Fruits and vegetables are bound to the climate and in order to supply a balanced diet, you need to source your veggies from all over the country. So are we factoring in the cost of fuel to ship all of these goodies? Are we factoring in the CO2 emissions from the company that makes the plastic irrigation pipes? How about the fertilizer? How about the pesticides? Are they telling me these are less harmful than cow farts? Here is the truth of the matter: if you take out meat production, there is literally no way to increase fruit and vegetable yields to make up the shortfall – this means people starve. No, it’s not hard to increase vegetable production up like that, no it’s not even very hard, it is very literally impossible. So next time someone feeds you that line how eating vegetables is better for the environment, just ask if they include pesticides, fertilizer and fuel as part of their claim.
– I will not swap my car for a bus or a train. I find it convenient to travel by car and its comfortable and because I can do so. Yup, middle fingers to all those pathetic people suffering (and even dying) from the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but effects of climate change in developing countries even though they’re the least responsible for them 🖕🖕😊😊 I’m getting tired of doing my tiny part when I see people who really could have an impact just giving the planet the finger. Both are correct. But what-about-ism is still not helping the situation vote with your wallet, do something about it. While i agree with what is said here, iam still wondering, These Companys produce goods we want to have? Right? They not just polluted the planet without a reason. So we are kinda still part of this? And a bus ride is not less poluting than a plane trip. A train is, if it is an electric train and the electricity is not produced by coal. So if you live in the US, take the plane. That’s so far from a clever comeback it’s not even funny. These 100 corporations, do you think they’re emitting greenhouse gasses for fun? Because they want to see the world burn? No, they are producing meat, fuel and other products we consumers choose to buy. We as consumers have all the power to pick what products to use, and time and time again we choose the option that is fast and easy but leads to more greenhouse gasses. Blaming the companies who produce these products is like blaming the weapons manufacturers for all the gun deaths.
Now, to continue that analogy, I’m not saying weapons manufacturers deserve none of the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but blame for deaths caused using their weapons. It’s a complex problem where capitalist greed, spineless lawmakers and a hostile population prone to violence all bear some of the blame. The exact same is true for greenhouse gas emissions. When a news source points out that you as an individual actually have immense power to control how much greenhouse gas you emit, and give relevant tips on how to do that, nothing is less helpful than some asshole trying to shift the blame away, because it will make people stop trying. Lying to people and telling them that they have no responsibility and agency when they actually do pacifies the population and makes sure that an otherwise completely solvable problem remains forever. People like Adam Johnson are a big part of why we haven’t come further with solving green greenhouse gas problem.
…and those same corporations are owned by corporations that also own CNN (see also Fox and all others); it’s no coincidence. Stop watching the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but corporate news. Well yes but they sell their stuff to people… individuals in rich countries need to make different choices, but the ones who really need to step up is the rich folks. No more private jets, no more luxurious yachts, no more going to space for funzies. Tax the rich and outlaw their extremely polluting lifestyle. Sort of like how the government NEEDS unemployment to keep inflation down so actually causes said unemploment to the tune of around 4 percent then has the utter gall and temerity to go after welfare recipients or in their words “dole bludgers”. Can anyone dispute this ? Always pisses me off when anyone tries to blame individual choices or habits as the reason for climate change when even if they managed to convince most the population to change personal habits it would still be insufficient, as corporations are the ones doing most the damage and the only way to change that is through new laws in all countries and strong punishment that isn’t just a fine and a slap on the wrist. If you fine something like this it just becomes the cost of doing business.
the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but more the serfs reduce their carbon foot print the more the corporations can increase, without the country incurring penalties. To be fair, those corporations advertise on CNN so… It’s the same as political ads with absolute lies. They pay the same as truth per spot. the whole “litter bug” thing was a created by a group of corporations like soft drink and fast food conglomerates who dont get me wrong, please dont litter, but dont think the insane about of trash that is all over the place is because of larger system at play. Every time i see that someone brings up the big companies stand for most of the pollution is shake my head and die a little inside. The fact that big companies pollute the most is still not an excuse for the everyday person to not take any steps to improve their own wasteful lifestyle. Weird thing to bring up when someone wants companies to take steps to improve their wasteful processes. Almost like you think the companies are totally innocent, but like companies are made of evil people too, it’s not just the idiot masses… This study is misquoted a lot. 100 companies have emitted 71% of green house gases since 1982. Livestock represent 14% of global ghg emissions at this moment. Switching to a no/low meat diet is 100% necessary for a sustainable future. Personal transport also represents a large portion of global ghg and walking/biking/public transport are especially low hanging fruit to meet clmiate needs. As humans we all need to contribute. You can’t use misquoted headlines like this to absolve yourself of responsibility.
Yes, particularly with the The System standard of excellence shirt it is in the first place but first baby. I used to work in animal rescue and there were so many new moms rehoming their pets for no particular reason except the general worry that the baby might be exposed to danger (some examples that don’t involve attacking: Dirtiness, parasites, accidental smothering, knocking over/being “too rough’, nipping when stealing food from their hands). Many seem to go through an overprotective phase where everything is a possible threat. I assume it’s some kind of evolutionary thing. I’m expecting our first in April, and I have a lovely orange cat who shows affection through nibbling. I think a few squirts from the water spray bottle will be enough to dissuade her from doing that to the baby, the same way we dissuaded her from showing her brand of love to the house plants. I do believe one can’t leave a pet and a kid unattended until the kid is quite grown, though. My cousin’s two-year old pulled her boxer’s tail, and he ended up snapping at the baby to show his displeasure, which resulted in a gash over the head and a few stitches. It’s an otherwise lovely dog, but animals should never be put in that position.
