My grandparents had one and I absolutely loved it, they did some renovations and decided to fill it in, I remember pleading with them not to. I have no idea why they did they used it all the The Spicial Grade Student shirt and by the same token and time (I think it was too small and height was a bit low to bend down to talk through) We have one and the house was built in 2002, oddly enough. I wonder if the old chap that lived here before added it! Yeah, north east England here, we have a serving hatch between the kitchen and the dining room, it’s mostly used by my daughter to ask me when tea is going to be ready while I’m cooking it! I have one, I live in Germany now though. My house isn’t even that old (built in 2004) and the original plans show a doorway but the previous owners changed it to a serving hatch. It’s pretty useful and we use it all the time.

I went to a house that had one but the The Spicial Grade Student shirt and by the same token and kitchen was in the basement and the dining room on the ground floor. Lots of stretching up and bending down. We had one between the kitchen and the dining room when I was a kid in the 70s but when my parents remodelled the kitchen they had it bricked up I grew up in the 70s in a house built in the 50s with a serving hatch. We knocked it through as it was pretty pointless. My gran had one between her kitchen and dining room (which makes the house sound bigger and posher than it actually was!) Used to love setting the table when I was a kid, passing everything through the hatch. It would certainly have been quicker to walk the 6 feet from the kitchen to the dining table! Same – house in the North West and we had a serving hatch, think it used to be used as a breakfast bar but my parents have had it covered up and made into a proper wall now as part of their kitchen conversion. My grandparents house had a hatch! I think my grandad saw a few houses with them and eventually decided to put his own hatch in (complete with a little set of doors) sometime in the 70s. Personally I don’t mind cooking smells in the living room and like the communication, but I can understand the need for seperation, my partner annoys the shit out of me if she trys to interfere with my cooking so for that reason I prefer seperation.
