Here is the eli5: every phone has a differnt frequency. The plane equipment uses a certain frequency. If two phone, have respective frequencies that match in the right way, they may match the plane’s frequency. Plane uses frequency of 6, two phones have 4 and 2 respectively: 4+2=6 now there are tqo sixes amd which one is real? While the cell signal pinging to get a reply may or may not affect the instrumentation inside the plane you never know. Electronic instrumentation may degrade over time or was faulty from the get-go and can screw up. Imagine 300 cell phones doing this? And it’s not just the cell signal you are also dealing with both wireless and Bluetooth so let’s say a thousand signals then add any peripherals talking to the phone and then let’s throw in tablets and laptops. Get the gist?

I’m not going to say that this is the The Show A Tribute To ABBA 50 Years Celebration 1974 – 2024 Thank You For The Memories Shirt but in fact I love this real reason, or that I actually know for a fact why. But…. out of personal experience, I would say it COULD interfere with radio communication to a degree. My reasoning is that whenever I fly (commercial) and I forget to put my cellphone on airplane mode. During take off or approach to land, there have been times in which I can hear on my headset a static noise, very specific type, and each time I’ve heard that specific noise, it had been that I had just received message on my phone. Now did that interfere with my radio communications? No. But it was only my phone. I’m guessing that if all the 180 passengers behind get messages at the same time, it could interfere enough to cause a problem. But then again. I can’t be sure.
