If you’ve been to Havana, or Cuba, you know that the airports are very small, and primitive. We were the only other plane on the tarmac, they closed the airport, and we sat on the small plane with the doors open and watched the secret service limos cruise slowly by while we waited to be escorted into the teeny airport. We sat in the airport for three hours as every piece of luggage was hand searched, and could not exit the airport. The Cubans present in the airport were so excited, and were dressed in red, white and blue, with small American flags. We were not able to leave the airport. All of a sudden there was a great deal of commotion, and the Cubans rushed for the exits. I left my students with the other chaperones and rushed outside to see the president and his entourage drive slowly by and wave to all the people assembled there. Such an historic moment! On the way home a week later, we sat in the tiny waiting space waiting for our charter, when one of our students noticed an older white dude sitting near an exit with a Panama hat pulled low over his face. It was Keith Richards. The Stones had performed a concert for the Cubans during that historic visit. We selfie bombed him and then security officials whisked him off to a more secluded area to wait for his charter.

Couch-surfed in Austria, ended up having our one host cancel on us like 2 days before we got there. Ended up getting picked up by some rich couple who lived practically in a castle, had a hot tub and a pool and everything. It was also the last stop before we crossed over into Eastern Europe where eating cheap became a whole lot easier.
