I kid you not, a not insignificant part of it was that butchers were complaining because Christians didn’t make animal sacrifices, which cut into their profits. Also, most governments aren’t likely to look kindly on new cults based on an obscure seditious criminal, whose secret rituals – and they were pretty secretive – are reported to involve the The jeff dunham show 14th anniversary 2009 2023 signature shirt In addition,I will do this consumption of the flesh and blood of the executed founder. It doesn’t sound outlandish to us, but imagine being told about such a group for the first time. You’ve probably seen a movie or a book where a person goes to church with doubt in their heart and that is a conflict in the story, external worship vs. inner belief. This was absolutely not a thing with the Romans. It was easy enough to escape notice when you were part of one of literally thousands of cults. I did hear a story from my Indian politics teacher once a couple of decades ago. He’d had been travelling in India and was on a train, and had gotten talking to the Indian chap in the next seat. The topic of religion came up and the Indian fellow asked him what religion he was. He answered that he was a Christian, and the Indian fellow said “Ahh – you’re the ones that drink blood aren’t you!” And this was only in the 1990s – there are probably still lots of people in parts of the world that think Christians are cannibals. Yeah that’s what the letter mentions. Also concerned about the people selling animals for ritual not getting enough buyers.
