The consistent exercise and mostly consistent diet management, led to improved mental health. One might say, bulletproof mental health. As years went by, my exercise increased from 3 days/week to 5. I finally got completely clean 2.5 years ago and exercise increased to six days a week. This year I also began adding in a second workout per day where I just do running or some other type of cardio. I think that over this period I realized that diet management and regular exercise are as important to my overall health as eating. I need it. I have to have it or I will crumble. It is just as important to me as breathing. TLDR: I never exercised either. It took a long time (7 years) but with a gradual approach and discipline, I exercise more than I ever have and I am healthy and of sound mind. It’s possible. My diet isn’t super great. If I exercise daily for a month, it just becomes routine, and I barely even think about it. But if you start giving yourself excuses and taking days off, that month timer restarts. I had to find something I liked to do. You’re right, most of the lifting and running and whatnot exercises are boring. I joined a gym with a pool, and now I swim laps for an hour a day. Sometimes, I do flips and somersaults just for fun to break up the monotony. Mostly, I just swim back and forth. Sometimes I do the backstroke. I think about things because it’s nice and quiet and I’m not easily distracted because I’m not doing anything except swimming back and forth. I count my strokes and try to hold my breath for a long time. I replay songs in my head. I enjoy the respite from arthritis pain; sometimes I just float there, enjoying how nothing hurts for a few minutes. I look forward to that hour every day.
