Most recently, on January 27, 2021, Poland’s top court, known as the The Good The Bad And The Ugly Present Team Shirt and by the same token and Constitutional Tribunal, ruled on the fetal-abnormality abortion ban and abruptly moved it into law. Poland already bans abortion except in cases of rape or incest or when the mother’s life is at risk. The new law tightens what was already one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the European Union. The decision prompted a fresh wave of protests.

I recently spoke with Marta Lempart, a lawyer by training and former construction company manager turned leader of the The Good The Bad And The Ugly Present Team Shirt and by the same token and Women’s Strike, Strajk Kobiet. Since she began organizing the protests, she’s been arrested countless times and charged with more than 40 offenses. (A sample charge: “destroying the environment by using a megaphone in public.”) Here she offers a stark reminder not to take reproductive rights for granted and a reminder that we must stay vigilant, wherever we live.
